That damned U.N.

What's Mallard raving about today?

The U.N.

For anyone with a hint of decency or shame, it would be pretty tough to cast stones about speeches made at the U.N. after Colin Powell's performance.

For Mallard...

That damned UN

What's Mallard raving about today?

The UN, Senators Clinton & Obama.

What kind of sick fetish caused Mallard to visualize a fight between Clinton and Obama like that? Clinton as a pant-suited lion who appears to be attempting to scratch the eyes out of an otherwise faceless Obama. Or mate with him.

Oh, and Mallard hates pretty much everything. Clear?

That damned appendix

What's Mallard raving about today?

The Appendix, the United Nations.

Mallard is sometimes so illiterately stupid, he's brilliant.

The United Nations is like a part of your body that was once considered useless, but is now believed to produce and protect good germs for your gut.

In other words, some people believe The United Nations to be useless but it is, in fact, very useful.

Congratulations, Mallard, for managing to make the exact opposite point you were trying to make.

That damned U.N.

What's Mallard raving about today?

Donald Trump, Rosie O'Donnell, Miss USA Scandal, the U.N.

Someone watches a lot of daytime TV and hates the U.N. and thought of a way to merge those two passions into a single incomprehensible bit of fifth-rate poetry.

That damned Fox

What's Mallard raving about today?

The U.N., News Corporation, O.J. Simpson, CBS News, Lara Logan, Katie Couric, Bob Schieffer, Jim Axelrod.

Wow, Mallard goes after Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, parent corporation of his beloved Fox News, for the OJ Simpson If I Did It book/program debacle!

You'd almost say that shows real stones, except then you realize that he names names in the other two predictions (the U.N., CBS News) and yet somehow manges to omit referencing News Corporation or Fox Broadcasting directly.

On the plus side, however, I didn't know who Lara Logan was, so I Googled her. Rowr!

Those damned cows

What's Mallard raving about today?

Cows, the U.N., greenhouse gasses, flatulence.

Honestly, I think Mallard has gone off the deep end. This particular premise was idiotic the first time it appeared. But to have it show up twice, non-sequentially, simply boggles the imagination.

But since we're forced to be here again, let me try to make a few things clear to Mallard:
  1. Statements of scientific fact are simply statements of scientific fact; attacking and mocking science just makes you look like a member of the Flat Earth Society.
  2. The number of cattle in the world is actually a function of human activity.
  3. The report Mallard keeps referencing is from 1994, for God's sake.
  4. Hot air is not a greenhouse gas.

Those damned emissions

What's Mallard raving about today?

Cows, the U.N., greenhouse gasses.

In my time doing this blog, this particular panel may be the single stupidest and wrong-headed premise yet (though by no means the most offensive). There are so many things here worth comment that I am just going to pick the two most obvious and leave it to commenters to pick the rest of it apart.

The algebra at work here is that cow farting and belching is as much of a biological imperative as other forms of human greenhouse gas production. I don't know about cows, but I could definitely stop driving my car before I could stop farting.

The idea that a cow could retain enough methane gas to float before exploding is quaint, but worthy of Mythbusters. And yet, the position of the footnote asterisk is quite interestingly placed in a way that it appears as if the U.N. is the source of this particular idea. Highly subtle hating on the U.N.

That damned Kofi Annan

What's Mallard raving about today?

Kofi Annan, plugged toilets.

I never realized how much Kofi Annan, apparently, looks like Robert Guillaume. I mention this in lieu of discussing the actual content of today's panel because there is nothing quite so tiresomely repetetive as right-wing carping about the United Nations. Now, if you want to get into plugged toilets, on the other hand, man does that get me steamed!

That damned United Nations

What's Mallard raving about today?

The United Nations.

Do you suppose the fellow being caricatured in the yellow shirt and vest is supposed to be Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? The Mr. Rogers ensemble has a disarming effect on the man that no number of U.N. sanctions could possibly hope to equal. "Would you like to visit the nuclear weapons program in the neighborhood?"

Those damned liberals

What's Mallard raving about today?

Liberals, the U.N., Mel Gibson-haters, nouns.

If you asked me a week ago whether anything would make me want to see more back-to-school tips, I would have said no. But a week of unrelenting Mel Gibson strips has managed to make me hope for a return to the back-to-school tips.
