That damned Rosie

What's Mallard raving about today?

Reality TV, Rosie O'Donnell.

I confess, I know next to nothing about Rosie O'Donnell so each of these panels, which presumably makes reference to something she has said or done, means absolutely nothing to me.

I assume, this being Mallard, he is full of shit, but that's just an assumption and I don't care enough to do research on crackpot right-wing objections to Ms. O'Donnell in order to extend my knowledge beyond the fact that she's a scary opinionated lesbian.

That said, I think that the woman in panel 5 will win this contest, since she is the only one capable of keeping her eyes open while on camera.

It must just make Tinsley urinate into his own face with glee when someone on the Left is a genuine asshole--like Rosie. (She is indeed guilty of acts similar to those described in the strip.)

On the other hand, when one of Tinsley's faves engages in jawdroppingly vicious-idiot and bigoted behavior (Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh being the most painfully obvious examples), Tinsley goes to great lengths to defend them.

And as regular witnesses well know, Tinsley himself loves to use bigotry--whether it's his provocative "Chinese eat dogs!" gimmickry, or calling for TSA agents at airports to exclusively search Middle-Eastern "types."

And nobody knows better than Garry Trudeau that Tinsley loves going after the family members of those on his Enemies List. Tell us, Bruce--how's that any better than Rosie at her worst?

I don't think any sensible person gives a rat's ass about Rosie, anymore than one would about Hilton, Spears, Lohan, or any of these other freaks who generate interest only through their idiot misbehavior. But Tinsley is anything but sensible.

When did Tinsley attack Garry Trudeau's family?

It's been a few years, but specifically, Tinsley would use his penchant for cheap shots against Jane Pauley--ostensibly because she was a "left-wing media pawn," but in reality specifically because she's Trudeau's wife.

I don't know if Tinsley stopped because Pauly retired in 2004, robbing Tinsley of his excuse, or because someone pointed out what horrible taste he was displaying...but while Googling for specific strips (and coming up dry) I found THIS astonishing passage in a Right-wing review of Right-wing strips:

But the tenor of the strip tends more to be gentle than angry, reflecting none of the bitterness so common today on the Left. Indeed, Muir’s girlfriend, the primary model for one of his characters, “is a total liberal.” As it happens, the same holds true for Mallard creator Tinsley, whose wife is a civil rights lawyer. There’s perhaps a lesson here. “It’s a funny thing,” Tinsley says. “All her liberal friends are incredulous that our marriage works, but none of my conservative friends have any trouble with it at all. They understand you can think differently about things and still be civil to one another.”

Almost immediately, this observation leads Tinsley to reflect on something else. “You ever notice how often liberals seem to think that, because they hold these lofty social views, it excuses them from having to be civil to bellboys and cabdrivers? I really think that by and large conservatives are just much nicer.” He pauses, thinking it over. “One of these days, I’ve gotta do a cartoon about that.”

Jeez louise. Yeah, those Lefties are totally unhinged.

So I guess the strip is just an outlet for Tinshley to unleash his anger toward his wife? Actually, I wonder if his wife is really a liberal in any recognizable sense, or if she's just liberal compared to Tinshley. ("She's so liberal she voted for McCain!")

The bellboy/cabbie observation is fascinating. Setting aside the question of why Tinshley would expect another person to have similar observations about how political views correlate with the treatment of bellboys and cabbies, I want to know how Tinshley managed to gather this evidence. How often does he observe liberals interacting with bellboys and cabbies? Is he really just saying that his wife mistreats bellboys and cabbies?

It is natural to assume Mrs. Tinsley was always a Liberal, but it's also possible that she became lefty as a direct result of living with Tinsley. I can see that happening.

On very rare occasions, Tinsley will drop the rant and speak of Liberals as if they are human--for example, when Jay Kennedy (the editor who gave him his first "break") died, Tinsley had Mallard write a nice eulogy for him in March/April--but I hardly need to point out to regular Mallard witnesses that most of the time, the "so-much-nicer" Tinsley "gently" depicts Liberals as gibbering morons too incompetent to survive (in spite of, mysteriously, their unbreakable stranglehold on The Entire U.S. Media, cough cough).

The "bellboys and cabbies" nonsense is just one more thing Tinsley makes up as he goes along, like "lowering tax rates increases government revenue," "global warming may be due to evil sun activity or cowfarts--but NEVER pollution," "Unhinged intolerant Liberals hate hate hate Christianity and want America to perish," and "The GOP is the responsible-spender party."

On a similar note, earlier this year Mallard cited a "study" that "shows" Conservatives give more to charity than Liberals. I was already wondering what the gimmick would be--were the cited charities limited strictly to the most popular tax shelters?--when I saw his source was Jonah Goldberg.

Anyone unfamiliar with Jonah should do a quick Google. His insane writings speak for themselves, but here's a couple of background highlights: he's the privileged son of Lucienne Goldberg (Linda Tripp's co-conspirator), and he once stated that, although he "supports the troops," he couldn't go enlist for service in Iraq because he has a daughter who would miss him, and a nice job. (Not kidding there, friends.)

And instead of roasting Jonah's cowardly, worthless, fat ass, Tinsley uses him as a source. Yessir, that's gooooood irony--from the guy who forgot Veterans' Day last year.
