That damned Barbarian

What's Mallard raving about today?

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Columbia University.

Kaitlyn wins a prize!
I'm actually surprised that he's not pissed about right-wing speakers getting pied and Ahmadinejad not, of course, he's a leader of a country and all the security would have been tighter.
I'd like to also point out Mallard's rather conspicuous epithet ("the Barbaric Iranian President") as another example of the rhetorical games he plays.

Mr. Ahmadinejad may well be barbaric and he may not be. American Media and Government insure that we only know of him what they would like us to know. Either way, Mallard's casual use of the epithet, as if it were a known and incontrovertible fact, bespeaks an intellect as empty as his rhetoric.

Will Tinny tell us why he's barbaric? Unlikely. That way, Tinny (whose hook-nosed caricatures of Jon Stewart speak for themselves) can coyly pretend it's because Ahmadinejad's an Israel-threatening Holocaust denier, and not simply because he's exactly the sort of uppity non-white non-Christian that Dubya's waging his bloody "crusade" against (in the name of freedom and democracy, of course).

As DaveyK notes, because of your not-so-free media you can't really tell what happened that day if you weren't there. Right-wing blogs and corporate-owned news outlets act as if Ahmadinejad was treated like beloved royalty; however, the international Spiegel.de describes the event thusly:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has started off his trip to New York with a visit to Columbia University, where he was greeted by boos and heckling from the students -- and was berated by the university president.

...And then goes on to describe precisely what was said at said heckling and berating. Huh. Did Ann Coulter ever get ripped by a university president prior to one of her paid tirades?

Oh, well, Tinny can ignore that; that's just the Liberal Media Conspiracy talking LA LA LA. Funny how Tinny never complains about "Freedom Zones" for Bush protesters, or police actions against anyone who heckles Dick Cheney and Company, including arrest hours after the fact, in the land of the free and the home of the brave...

Come on Tinny. Until Columbia's president introduces a conservative speaker with a 10-minute rant about how evil they are, you might want to tone down your persecution complex a little bit.

Wait, the red carpet at Columbia is getting yelled at for 10 minutes then berated for another hour by your audience?

I'd hate to know what Tinsley thinks is *bad* treatment.

I'd just like to add that it was pretty universally reported that Ahmadinejad was ripped on royally. Even Fox News reported on the actual reception. You don't have to go as far as Germany to get "truth".

But ... but no one tried to hurl pastry at Ahmadinejad! Liberals only throw pies at Coulter!

Come on, people -- you know Tinz wrote this before the actual speech, based on what the magic gnomes who live in his collection of empty rye bottles told him would happen. I imagine soon he'll immediately stop drawing Ahmadinejad badly and go back to ... I dunno, evil sun or something.

World's smallest violin for the poor, disrespected conservative speakers.

Is not Ahmadinejad, in fact, a conservative?
Granted he is an extreme theocrat like many in the region, but so are many American conservatives.
Mallard should see this as a positive thing, they are not so far apart.

Incidents of pies:
3
Incidents of salad dressing:
1

David Horowitz had pies at Butler University.
William Kristol had pies at Earlham College.
Ann Coulter had pies.
Pat Buchanan had salad dressing.

There endeth the list of violence.

Unfortunately, David Horowitz pulled out the violin and said that it was a wave of violence proving his point about liberals being intolerant in universities and the need for his "Academic Bill of Rights" (which would essentially allow any student with a bad grade and a republican background to have a professor suspended for giving him a bad grade). If only we were so lucky for waves of violence to always be like this. 3 Pies vs. bullets in Iraq, which would the American troops prefer? Gang wars in the ghettos: pies or knives, you pick!

I'm not saying it's right to throw pies, but it's wrong to imply that all conservative speakers have been banned while an Iranian president was welcomed. No one liked him speaking, but it was vital to prove that we, unlike Iran, do allow people to speak. Even if a few students in the past have taken it upon themselves to throw food while someone was speaking.

Man, Tinny's timing turns out to be perfect--check out these excerpts from an article in Tuesday's Reuters:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - More than 100 students scuffled with police and hardline supporters of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday on Tehran University campus and chanted "Death to the dictator" outside a hall where the Iranian president spoke...

Monday's protest was the second rowdy reception Ahmadinejad has received at a university in less than a year. In December, students tried to disrupt his speech on another campus by hurling firecrackers, chanting and burning his picture...

One of the pro-reform students said those allowed inside to listen were handpicked because they supported the president. "We were not invited," said the student, asking not to be named.

Students and activists say some of those who have spoken out against the president and his government in the past two years have been detained or blacklisted from university courses.

(end excerpt)

HAYYYYYY TIN-TIN! HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT HECKLERS IN UNIVERSITIES NOW? And those references to handpicking supporters, and harassing and blacklisting protesters? Do THEY remind you of anything? Anything at all?

Welcome to the barbarian in the bathroom mirror.
