That damned Media

What's Mallard raving about today?

The Media, Senator Clinton.

Confession time. I don't really follow the news, except what I can get through The Daily Show. Ninety percent of the time, I have to do a search to find reference to whatever story Mallard is raving about. In order for me to be aware of a news story, it has to be widely reported, on the order of O.J. Simpson or Senator Larry Craig.

And yet, I know that a Democratic fundraiser was arrested on a theft charge and is suspected of campaign-finance violations.

You're going to have to trust me here, I know. But the mere fact that I can tell you that proves that Mallard is full of crap. Which, of course, is probably not new news to anyone either.

I was wondering how long it would be before Tinsley pulled out this "joke" setup again-it's one of his standards.

I wonder how many of those Republican scandals have been mentioned by Mallard.

What scandal?

The guy was a Democratic contributor; he got caught; his crimes were revealed; Hillary's campaign promptly pledged to donate the funds.

Man, if a politician were responsible for the crimes committed by everyone who donated to his or her campaign...bloops, I'm trying to apply logic to a Tinsleytoon. How silly of me.

Now, let's talk about Halliburton...Tinsley? Tinny? Hello? Did he leave?

If I see any more duck crotch, I'm leading a boycott of every paper that carries this crap.

I think Tinshley operates under the misapprehension that this "oh, sorry, I was just waiting for the mainstream media to report on the latest thing they're squawking about at Free Republic" meme is somehow "beloved" by his loyal readers.

Thereare several fundamental problems with this assumption, of course. See if you can spot them all!

Sometimes I wish there was a bizarro Duck and Cover blog, where I could read what fans of Mallard think about the strip. This is one of those times.

(And yes, I wonder if this strip really does have diehard fans. It has to, right? Someone must be supporting this thing and requesting that every newspaper in the country put it on its editorial page.)

Oh, sorry, I was just waiting for Tinsley to stop sucking.

I try to stay out of the minutia because it usually just consists of bloggers and wonks arguing semantics. While I skim the first few pages of the Washington Post in the cafe in my office buildings a few mornings a week, I wouldn't exactly consider myself throughly informed. Therefore, when I HAVE heard of a story, I assume it's likely major news. I had heard of the Hillary Clinton story and have been anxiously awaiting the Tinman's balanced, nuanced approach to what looked to be little more than a deflated scandal.

Point for billywitchdoctor and the parallel to Halliburton.

I would love to be able to make Tinny read every one of these comments on each of these blog posts a la Clockwork Orange.

I almost forgot that when Clinton was president, Republicans were constantly fuming over made-up scandals. There was eventually a real scandal, of course (OMG SEX!), but all the rest of them turned out to be imaginary. If Hillary becomes president, I pray that this isn't an omen that we'll go back to that. Especially since there are a million real Bush scandals that Republicans (except for the patriotic ones) have been ignoring for years.

Actually, I, too have been waiting for equal coverage of Democratic and Republican fundraisers. As of last week, a Nexis search for Norman Hsu and Hillary Clinton reveals 1,200 hits. 26 in the NY Times, 16 in the Washington Post, Hsu, charged with fraud September 20, has been covered by CNN, MSNBC, and the network news many times, long before being charged with a crime.

Now, how many people have heard the name of Alan Fabian? Anyone? A Romney fundraiser, indicted on 23 counts including fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice? 21 total hits, once in the Post, never in the Times.

OK, how about Robert Lichfield? Chairman of Romney's Utah Finance Comittee? Class action suit against his boarding schools, with allegations of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse? Ring a bell? 27 hits, once in the Post, never in the Times.

Yes, equal coverage would be nice. But I'm not holding my breath.

Bush Sr. and wife are fans.

Search amazon.com for the book Mallard Fillmore and read the reviews. It's easy to tell the fans, they'll give it top ratings while everyone else on the planet gives it the lower ones.

I like the one about those who hate it "mindlessly spewing the party line" and not reading it. That's why I read it. So I can intelligently be disgusted by it.

Guiliani's
good friend who he was pushing to have Bush name him Homeland Security secretary, soon to be indicted. Bribery, Tax Fraud, Obstruction of Justice.. And some guy that contributed money to Hillary did something illegal. Yeah, which story was covered more again?
