Those damned Activists

What's Mallard raving about today?

Global-Warming Activists, Mars, Jupiter, SUVs.

If Global-Warming activists did believe that it was caused only by Republican activity, they would demonstrate as much understanding of Scienece as Ignorant-of-all-this-Science-Stuff-and-Proud-of-it Mallard.

As it is, however, this Straw Man argument is tired and lacks Evil Sun.

I'm beginning to wonder if he even understands how global warming works.

Mallard's argument calls for solar power! If "evil sun" is responsible for global warming, then we must take some of his power!

Beginning to wonder?

And does Tinshley understand how anything* works, really?

Ah, the tried-and-true "Mallard" method: start the week with a lameass joke, then repeat that joke more or less without variation for the entire week. Ten to one tomrrow's strip is also going to be a variation on "St00pid Libruls 'n' Global Warming iz st00pid".

Global warming deniers are boring (especially in Mallard Filmore form). This can be proven with science.

Probably.

Anyway, if you tried to explain it to him, his brain would just go "HUR TOO MANY WORDS", plus he is old (which is a state of mind, of course) and hasn't yet got used to the idea that latte coffee isn't that posh any more (was it ever?). So this'll be around for a while. File under "old man ranting".

ObDisclaimer: I am not a scientist.

However, seems to me that trying to draw parallels between global warming on Earth and global warming on Mars and Jupiter is disingenuous because the latter two have utterly different atmospheres and biospheres from the former. So while non-human-induced global warming might occur on other planets, that doesn't automatically invalidate the argument that humans have affected global warming on this planet.

Really, I can't even begin to comprehend the global-warming denier brain. Do they also think that smog and garbage are just natural occurrences? Is the thin pollutant dust that settles on everything in the Los Angeles area just some common process unaffected by the tailpipes and smokestacks that pour out their filth every day? Isn't the health of every freaking creature on the planet worth taking the risk that maybe - just maybe - human activity has some reversible effect on the global climate? How can they compare the financial cost to businesses to the human cost to all, including the executives of those businesses?

Mallard's making an emotional argument, not an intellectual one. It's pitched at people who don't want the facts.

So while it's entirely correct to mock the ignorance of his cartoon duck, I don't know that Tinsley himself doesn't know the facts. He just doesn't want to accept them and, in any event, he gets his paycheck for doing what he's doing.

Making fun of deniers may be the only way to defeat them.

BWAHAHAHA

"Possible evidence"

Sorry, you'd have to observe global warming on all 8 planets + the plutoid, and the instruments would have to read higher output from the sun for Earth to be experiencing sun-caused global warming.

And Mallard, don't tell me that ignores the various mechanisms for what passes for climate on other planets (Mars: eccentricity, angle, wobble, dust storms. Jupiter: gas content, thick atmosphere, dust storms). That's what you ignored first. Where's this requirement for "peer reviewed" anyways? You think you're the peer?

Mallard forgot Titania and Pluto, since those are also on the list of things that are "warmer". (Yes, one's a moon). However, one is believed to mostly be regulated internally (and is a moon) and the other has an unknown "normal".

Where did he pull "republicans are to blame for global warming" from?

Has anyone ever said that?

People have influenced the climate, and republicans are people...

I guess?

Yes, but Thursday's will be on something completely different that will take up Mallard until next Tuesday, when he starts ranting on some other random subject.

Some information for all the folks with science degrees who comment on DaveyK's post...

Subject: Human Caused Global Warming Myth-Fact?

31,072 American scientists have signed this petition,
including 9,021 with PhDs
http://www.petitionproject.org/index.html
The Petition Project website today said there are 31,072 scientists who have signed up, and Robinson said more names continue to come in.

In terms of Ph.D. scientists alone, it already has 15 times more scientists than are seriously involved in the U.N.'s campaign to "vilify hydrocarbons," officials told WND.

"The very large number of petition signers demonstrates that, if there is a consensus among American scientists, it is in opposition to the human-caused global warming hypothesis rather than in favor of it," the organization noted.

Mars and Jupiter have completely different cycles from ours, especially Jupiter.

The Evil Sun has probably not changed its 11 year cycle in about 10 repetitions. Of which we only have detailed and precise records of the last 2 or 3.

It's the Earth's natural (Milankovic) cycles that determine long-term variations in insolation, leading to the initiation of glaciation and deglaciation, accelerated by either the absorption of release of C02 then by water vapor feedback, then albedo and current changes, etc.

But anyway, the denialists are actually fond of pretending that seasons for Jupiter represent warming trends. They've even done that for Mars - as well as probably confusing dust and salt with ice extent.

A persistent denialist, obviously a Tinsley reader, told me repeatedly that a "brown dwarf sun" called "Planet X" was the cause of global warming in the solar system, that it was headed for Earth, and would doom us all, but the scientists were hiding the truth from us.

I live in Oregon, where that senile and demented petition project hoax is housed. There aren't even 31,000 TV weathermen on that thing - it's filled with the names of Disney characters and dead people - and it has almost zero climate scientists. It does have its share of petroleum engineers and Austrian economists. Many of whom have PhDs. Many of which are from the prestigious Close Cover Before Striking College of the Americas. And are honorary.

And actually, the bonus is that the names on the petition aren't all in fact put there by the alleged signers. The Oregon Petition Project looks for text with some element of the consensus on climate change next to something that can be characterized as skeptical, and puts the name on the petition "for" the actual scientist. That's how they pretend to get about 1% real climate scientists signing off on it.

So you can see above what Tinsley-educated means evaluating the real world. It means drawers filled with titles to the Brooklyn Bridge.

anonymous coward posted a link to a "petition" hosted by the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located about seven miles from Cave Junction, Oregon that
markets a home-schooling kit for parents who are concerned about how "American schools have degraded severely " and publishes the book "Nuclear War Survival Skills," describing how to survive nuclear war.

Rather than draw any conclusions from this, I prefer to ask: How many home-schooler survivalists it takes to screw in a light bulb?

@Marion Delgado & rewinn:
I knew anonymous goober was talking out its iurvnec as soon as I saw the WingNutDaily URL in its post.

@Kaitlyn:
Well, the position of the Republican Party, Fox Noise and other wholly owned subsidiaries of the right-wing noise machine is that global warming is a completely natural phenomenon, so "logically", lib'ruls must be saying climate change is completely caused by human activity, and specifically Republican activity because lib'ruls believe Republicans are the source of all evil (to avoid admitting that they, lib'ruls, are themselves the source of all evil).

Amusing how every comment to this blog must agree with all the others. If they do not they are considered totally wrong with no right to their opinions ...or so it appears. I assume the same group comments to this blog on a daily or weekly basis.
Of course what else would one expect from a group of closed minded liberals, which from reading some of the comments is quite obvious. One person posted a study from a group of scientists who apparently do not accept as fact, the "theory" of Global Warming as taught by the learned professor Al Gore. The rest of the gang who I take it always disagrees with the creator of Mallard Fillmore, becomes angry and shows their unique intelligence with calling the person a "coward" and ripping the study as if they actually know who these scientists are.
Liberalism is a mental disease...there is no cure :).

Shouldn't you be too drunk to type by now, Bruce?

I mean, "Anonymous"?

So liberals are anyone who believes global warming is a problem?

I never realized Newt Gingrich was a liberal.

Ooo!
I'm DISEASED!
Awesome!

Ripping off these studies as if we actually know who these scientists are?

I suppose at least by ripping them off, I've actually read some of them, as opposed to the sum and total of debunking done here in these posts:

Global warming is a hoax because liberals/democrats say it is true and use Al Gore as a spokesman and some scientists signed some stuff saying it wasn't true on a website that gave the conclusion I was looking for.

Oddly enough, I get my information from articles and posts by people who can be verified to be real scientists (with relevant degrees) who link to peer-reviewed articles and actual published research, and anon links to a... petition?

And here I was operating under the assumption that a mere petition WASN'T going to serve as evidence.

Regarding that petition:

607 "scientists" from the state of Indiana signed that petition.

I can't claim to know any of them. And that bothers me.

Why? Because the requirements to sign the petition have been met by many people I personally know and those I know by name only (but as real people).

Not a single member of the Geography department or the Astronomy department has signed the petition, even though qualified.

Re: anonymous
This is classic trolling behavior.

Make some provocative statement in a forum. When everyone on the forum argues against your dumbass idea, claim a lack of tolerance for alternative views.

Dumbass troll.

Then why do you bother, o anonymous darling?

@ Anonymous Coward: I wrote out your full name simply as a matter of accuracy. If you had the courage of your convictions, you would create a login and then stand by your statement.

Can you imagine George Washington or Thomas Jefferson posting anonymous? Geez, that's why John Hancock is so famous ... he wrote his name EXTRA BIG so the King would know who to hand.

Anonymous cowards just troll-and-run, which is a pretty sad commentary on the value they put on their time.
