Those damned Liberals

What's Mallard raving about today?

SUVs, Liberals, The Federal Government.

It's hard to make a coherent complaint when your grasp of the mechanics of the English language is limited.

For example, today's panel clearly states that placating Liberals involves decrying the Federal Government as huge wasteful, overpriced, and unnecessary. Who wants to bet that's not what Mallard actually meant?

Also, unnecessary? Mallard is an anarchist who believes the Federal Government is unnecessary?

So Mallard's saying SUV owners are irresponsible, right? Because they're wasting a finite resource at an obscene rate? Tinsley is suddenly very concerned about Peak Oil? Is that it?

Per one of Duck-O's heroes, I am given to believe that Words Mean Things. Tinsley has long ago moved beyond that trite but true axiom.

You see, us liberals, we love us some huge, wasteful, overpriced unnecessary gummint. On the other hand, we fo sho hate on that SUV. So if we call the SUV the Federal Government, we can love the SUV.

Didn't Abraham Lincoln once say that calling an SUV the Federal Government doesn't make it one?

Some information concerning the sham-master, your hero "Big Al", what a guy. We will hear from DaveyK's "highly intelligent liberal" gang that this is all B.S. and lies. "Our Global Warming leader would never do that."

Energy Guzzled by Al Gore’s Home in Past Year Could Power 232 U.S. Homes for a Month
Gore’s personal electricity consumption up 10%, despite “energy-efficient” home renovations

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, An Inconvenient Truth, a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service.

That's the worst-drawn vehicle I've ever seen in my entire life. It doesn't even have any doors, or anywhere for doors to be*. And the wheels seem to exist in another dimension entirely.

* If only Bruce's car** were like this, and he couldn't get into it, law enforcement in his neck of Indiana*** would be able to do other things besides shadow him home from the bar.

** For some reason, I don't envision him driving an SUV. He seems more like a rusty-old-Chevy-with-different-colored-passenger-side-door kind of guy.

*** Latest poll has Obama up by one in Indiana. Expect a lot of empty bottles in the trash**** out front of the Casa de Tinshley this week.

**** No, not recycling. Are you high?

Oh, and hi, Bruce. Up and copy-pasting early, I see.

Regarding the Astroturf about Gore's energy use:

(Setting aside the fact discussion of Al Gore in this context is a complete non sequitor, but concerning AnonyBruce's "attack" on Al Gore:

This is the standard problem with ad hominem attacks. Note that that whole point of the posting is that "Gore's house uses a lot of power". Not a single word about the real issue here: The issues raised about global climate change.

We all understand why Tinsley and his neocon sources need to distract attention away from this. But even if we assume that the worst of the charges are completely true (i.e. that Gore is "just in it for the money" --a charge that stands for about 0.1 secs if you really bother to look at the evidence). This still says absolutely nothing about the real issue.

So, I guess using this "logic" we should assume that since Albert Einstein had a chaotic family life: fathering (and abandoning) an illegitimate daughter, going through some really messy divorces, and finally ending up marrying a cousin) that General Relativity (and, consequently, all of modern cosmology) is just garbage. (Or, more precisely an "elite plot".)

I still think the name "anonymous" should be replaced (as slashdot does) with "anonymous coward".

If you won't stand behind your opinion to the extent of having a handle, it's clear that you don't believe in it yourself.

Once again, Tinsley needs an editor!

The comic is stupid, but it could at least be stupid and slightly funny if he dropped both the first clause and the "placate" clause. It would then have the right flow to be funny, e.g. :

Our SUV is wasteful, stupid and badly drawn, so .... we're going to name it "The Mallard"

Heh, this anonymous is becoming a regular.

I bet you're proud of yourself, sticking it to us, right?

Unfortunately, I've heard of Gore's wasteful energy house (Bush's ranch is conservative on energy, by the way. True fact, he built it to be that way)

Yes, actions speak louder than words. Gore is a ninny, I've always believed that. Happy? As has been pointed out, if that is the core of your argument, you need a new one. You must be so excited to have such a prominent spokesman that you can make attacks like that on, it means you don't have to actually debate the issue.

Hey this comic does have an editor! Sure I should've sent this one back and told him to look up "placate," but I didn't feel like it. If that's the biggest problem with a Fillmore, then it's a very light day indeed.

And honestly, the only ones who even notice this sort of thing is you people here. No one with a brain actually reads this comic, it just runs in papers to keep the nutjobs from incessantly complaining about Left Wing Bias in the funnies. Dagwood Bumstead is a Marxist! Mary Worth is a filthy hippie!

The funniest thing about this comic is the strips that I do actually have to reject. Good god, most of those don't even have a picture of a duck in them, just drunken scribbling about how the negroes and the gays are going to unite to overthrow the secret Zionist cabal, or how Hillary was part of the 911 attacks.

Seriously, a day where the worst part of his comic is word usage is almost as fun an editing job as fixing a Miss Buxley nipple-slip.

rewinn...so because you give yourself a handle means you actually do believe the drivel you add to this blog? What a
pathetic little man.One of daveyk's liberal soldiers.I have noticed other anonymous comments which you apprently approve of because they agree with you.
I don't care if you lick windows, take the special bus or occasionally pee on yourself.
You hand in there sunshine, you're friggin' special.

Ouch! I've been busted! This whole global warming thing is just a moneymaking scheme I cooked up. I could've made a pile after the vice presidency by doing corporate speaking gigs or working for lobbyists, but the real money is in independent filmmaking, trust me. Being a famous, powerful politician and attorney wasn't lucrative enough for me, I'm too greedy. So I jumped on this big-money eco-bandwagon, where the REAL rich guys rake in the cash!

I knew I shouldn't have used so much electricity in my house, that was the clue that PROVES global warming is a sham! No wait, global warming is real, but it is not manmade. No wait, it's manmade but it's all China's fault not the USA's. Or whatever the latest talking point is, you get the idea.

And I would've gotten away with it too, if not for you meddling anonymous right-wing bloggers!

Gee, Bruce. Not even noon when you posted this and you're already shitfaced. Do you plan on driving? Should I warn the cops?

(Obligatory note that the troll made no effort to actually address any of the points people made about the speciousness of his "argument.")

I have soldiers! That's so cool. I had no idea penning a silly blog made me so powerful.

I order you all to invade something. As I don't have time or inclination to figure out what to invade, I suggest you work that detail out amongst yourselves.

Anonymous said...

I say we invade Switzerland. They're just a little TOO neutral to be trusted.

See, if I wanted to explain why MF is a bad comic, this is the example I would use. That SUV drawing is terrible, and yet it takes up half the space. It's almost like it would kill him to open up a drawing reference book.

I can excuse the conservative leanings, since jokes could still be funny coming from the right. I can even excuse the lack of humor, because let's face it, there are two, maybe three newspaper comics out there that are funny (and no, Doonesbury's not one of them).

But the fact of the matter is, the drawings are bad enough that he has to LABEL THEM half the time so you can discern what they are.

When you can't argue your point, simply insult a Kennedy, Gore, Clinton or Carter.

Of course, make the same insult every time. Doesn't matter if it has anything to do with the topic at hand.

Daveyk: As a symbolic gesture, I invaded my nieghbor's backyard. I quickly retreated before being noticed, but I think the point was made nonetheless.

Tinsley's editor: you have my deep, deep sympathy. At least you have airbrushing Miss Buxley with which to console yourself.

The Government is hughe wasteful overpriced and unnecessary? Well gee, who's fault is that? We've had conservatives running things for the past 8 years and things are worse than ever.

Anonymous said...

Wait, where are we attacking?

"I have noticed other anonymous comments which you apprently approve of because they agree with you."

Oddly enough, I have the feeling that such people would take being defaulted to the anonymous coward handle much less... seriously.

It takes a certain kind of person to be called a coward and respond with "I don't care if you lick windows, take the special bus or occasionally pee on yourself."

I hope to God you aren't actually related to anyone who is MH.
