That damned Day

What's Mallard raving about today?

The Troops

You know what would be a good day to thank the troops? Independence Day.

You know, July 4?

The day you decided to bitch about trilogies instead.

Maybe he recalled that somewhere in the past he had missed a Veteran's Day or Memorial Day.

How is some guy in Afghanistan protecting my freedoms here in the US?

Post WWII, the main defender of American Freedom has not been the US military, it has been the ACLU.

This self-serving nonsense is as close to self-awareness as we'll ever see from this cartoonist.

He's opening another room-temperature one at this moment, high-fiving himself and chortling over how he got away with it.

And he did! His chosen audience not only never noticed his silence on the Fourth, they also think this is a lovely gesture, and they're cutting it out to mail to their kids in the Army, who will one day come home… but let us not dwell on that Poe-like event on this lovely day.

Every day should be Thank Our Troops Day, as long as it's not Drool Inappropriately Over "Pop Tarts" Day, Hate Brown People Day, Bitch About What's On TV Day, Something Something Pants Day, Draw a Horrible Jewish Caricature Day, Repeat the Same Strip As the Past Four Days Day, or I Want My License Back Day.

Best thing is, he wrote this strip somewhere around July 6 and didn't even seem to feel the faintest flicker of shame.

The only reference to such a day that I can find says it was March 17. We can expect a reference to Independence Day in early December.

Also Nancy's cardboard aunt, Fritzi Titz, seems to be making an oblique call-out to something vaguely like it. Way to call in air support.

One way to thank our troops would be not to send them to die for Halliburton.

Good Gawd he needs an editor. Why so many words to express such a simple idea Bruce? He has to be the shittiest writer of all time. If you're going to write idiotic tripe and pass it off as a comic, you could at least be succinct.

Thanks for killing hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children, dear troops! That's keeping us free. If only the libruls didn't whine so much, you'd already be killing Iranians and Syrians too. Don't worry, that will be next.

Aaaand oozing overcompensation it is. Don't worry; there's still time for huffy defensiveness, too: "I didn't forget the Fourth of July! Them libruls forgot the Fourth of July!"

That's our Mallard: always ready to use our troops as a shield. Of course, I'm sure that if he hadn't forgotten the Fourth of July, today's strip would have been devoted to something equally relevant and meaningful -- like bitching about people who use "lunch" as a verb.

HMmmm, there's no 'cackle with glee" checkbox...

There's no place for glee in a Mallard Fillmore blog.
