That damned Blame

What's Mallard raving about today?

Bill O'Reilly, The Media, Handguns.

Right. Let's worry about how this affects Bill O'Reilly and the handgun rather than the victim of terrorism and his family.

I know it's too much to expect pro-"life"ers to take any responsibility for the results of their own wildly irresponsible rhetoric, but would it kill Tinsley, if he has nothing nice to say about Dr. Tiller (an American hero, incidentally), to just SHUT THE FUCK UP about him? It's really extraordinary--not even a token expression of regret, just a straight jump to the piteous, whiney "IT'S NOT OUR FAULT!" mewling.

Let's be clear: Tinsley uses a man's senseless murder as the springboard for a stupid, hackneyed "joke" about libruls always blamin' guns fer everthin hur hur hur. And simultaneously, he thinks of himself as part of a "culture of life."

What a shithead the man is.

I'm not really sure what Tipsy's point is here. Is he drawing a distinction between the "mainstream media" and the "media"? Is he claiming that the "media" is schizophrenically violating its own standards of blame?

Sadly, the confusion is unsurprising; I understand excessive alcohol consumption can have a deleterious effect on one's ability to form and express coherent thoughts.

It's not terrorism when its used against people we don't like. Duh.

It's not just O'Reilly, it's Beck, Savage, Coulter, and the whole Fox crew. And it's not the mainstream media pointing it out. It's anyone with half a brain.

Well, at least Tinshley didn't forget the real victims here.

Also, to make one positive comment: thank you, Bruce, for not attempting to put a caricature of Billo in the strip.

A decent human being would show some respect for the dead.

In other news, Bruce actually tried to draw some semblance of a TV news set this time!

I can't imagine it's a live soundstage though. More likely WFDR has placed an old anchor desk in a storage room along with a broken VHS camcorder, and Mallard "broadcasts" from there, unaware that he was actually fired years prior and is only still receiving paychecks to due a glitch in the HR system.

I found a Bruce Tinsley interview on youtube!

Tinsley blames all violence on the media unless Republicans are ivolved in the incident. He wants to censor everything liberal and give absolute power to the Republican party-

Whoa, great find, Michael. Best part: he claims to work for eighty to ninety hours a week, thanks to the massive amount of "research" he does. And then, we can only assume, he goes on a drunken bender, and when he regains sentience, all he can remember of his research is a handful of Limbaugh talking points, so he regurgitates them onto the paper and calls it a week. It's a living!

Maybe Ducky should instead spend 12 hours a day learning how grammar works in the English language.

While I definitely do not see Dr. Tiller's work in a very positive light at all (sorry, but the fact that I was an extremely premature baby colors my view on late term abortions considerably), but murder is still unjustified and Mallard Fillmore is still unfit to be read by anyone who is educated enough to be literate.

I love the logical errors in that video.

-Tinsley claims to spend several days on each comic but this is a daily comic.
-He claims to have numerous ideas on certain days but his comics never contain more than one idea.
-He mentions research but all ofhis cartoons are ased on proganda vague references and lies-
-He loons much obder than in http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/BruceTinsley0605.jpg&imgrefurl=http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/2009/06/the_interview_mallard_fillmore.html&h=234&w=228&sz=15&tbnid=P3CRVYK9SL9lJM:&tbnh=109&tbnw=106&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbruce%2Btinsley%2Bphoto&usg=__xVqtJSm-cRKpn_10S5jj55v0IOQ=&ei=NVVBSsrSEJLBlAeA5tT-CA&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image or http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2902855-I hope he is dying.

I don't think I fully get it. My first reaction was that Tinsley was jumping from the Tiller murder to something about gun control, but on further thought I realized that he was more likely attempting to exonerate O'Reilly et al. of the crime by saying that the shooter was acting on his own ideas, rather than being influenced by inflammatory rhetoric. The second explanation makes more sense in my mind, but making sense is not exactly Mr. Fillmore's forte, so I will just declare this comic incomprehensible fail and move on.

I don't ask for some kind of admission that right wing media bears some responsibility for the murder. I understand that "Mallard Filmore" will never, ever involve any admissions of responsibility.

But would it kill him to just STFU? An old man was gunned down in a church.

Lemme guess: This twelve or thirteen hours per day of "research" Tinshley claims to do consists of sitting on his pickled ass watching Fox news and listening to the various talk radio honks.

My summary of the video:

- A cartoon takes only a few minutes from conception to being finished... unless he has to draw caricatures, in which case it takes hours. (He must have stayed up all night to finish this masterpiece.)
- He doesn't do backgrounds because he's "lazy." Bruce Tinsley is a professional cartoonist, by the way.
- He "works" 80-90 hours a week, most of which is "research" like reading the paper. So basically, just living life and thinking about things constitutes as work. That's great news; just wait till my boss sees my next expense report!
- Surprisingly, he has the decency to admit that he's ashamed of some of his work. I guess they can't all meet his stringent standards for insightful commentary and flowing poetry.

90 hours a week? LOL!

The big money in cartooning is in re-using the content. "Doonesbury" books, t-shirts and coffee mugs must generate a lot more money than the strip syndication fees (...especially considering shrinking newspapers).

That's why some people can make a living with webcomics that get NO syndication fees.

Has anyone EVER bought a "Mallard Fillmore" book, t-shirt or coffee mug?

No wonder Tinkley drinks. The FREE MARKET has ruled that he must slave for 90 hours a week and still he can't come close to the success of, say, Sinfest

I commented at YouTube. More or less:

Caricatures take time, because Tin Eye has to dig through the files to find the last crappy caricature he did and trace over it, perhaps adding a half inch to the chin. Drinking is important to his work as well, and that takes time too.

...but he does save time by never fixing a bad drawing or correcting an erroneous 'fact.'
