That damned Lamp

What's Mallard raving about today?

Reality TV

A week in the mind of Mallard Fillmore:

  • Beetles in coffee drinks
  • College Professors and (presumably) Obamacare
  • 3 days of sympathy for George Zimmerman
  • China and North Korea
  • Reality TV and Free Market hating
Imagine what it must feel like to be trapped with a mind like that?

I may be in the minority on this, but I think most so-called "Reality Shows" are generally speaking no worse than most of the scripted shows that they replaced.
Remember "The Honeymooners"? "The Courtship of Eddie's Father"? "My Mother The Car"? "Dallas"?

Mindless bildgewater, most of it, same as "Reality TV".

At least "Reality" shows sometimes show actual people doing actual work, sometimes dangerous work - tarted up a bit to attract ratings, but so what? That's much better than the whining of office sheep in "thirtysomething" or "Friends" or "Bewitched"

I don't like the so-called "reality TV" shows either, but just change the channel or use the "off" switch.
The networks like them so much because they are so much cheaper to produce. I had read somewhere that, in the later years, the cast of "Friends" were paid something like a million each per episode. It is much cheaper to give a one million prize to one winner of Survivor, for the entire season. And that's the free market that Mallard does not like, nor bother to switch off.

So this is what Harry and Louise are doing now?

Speaking of redundancy, lookit that ellipse abuse. Ellipses after an exclamation point? Seriously?

Maybe it's just the background coloring, but aside from the text this seems an unusual amount of effort from Batshit for a Sunday strip--all wasted on some "satirical" grousing about reality TV. Can't tell if Tinsley is butthurt over getting another speak-white-power-to-truth strip shot down by Stoopit Liburul Editor, or still butthurt over the cancellation of "Veronica Mars."

I once compared "Mallard Fillmore" to "The Lockhorns." Sunday's "Lockhorns" made me laugh out loud, twice, so I retract the comparison, with my most heartfelt apologies to Hoest and Reiner.

Jeez, Tog, I thought of Harry and Louise too. Apart from that, the strip really didn't bring anything to mind at all. Maybe that's the whole purpose of the strip — read it long enough, and your mind ends up completely empty and you've been given a whole set of opinions.

Chekov's Gun: "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there."

Tinsley's Lamp: "If in the second panel you require a lamp to be thrown, maybe you should have drawn one into the first panel... ah f*ck it, it's Miller Time."
