That damned Sex Education

What's Mallard raving about today?

Teachers, Sex Education.

The reason they can't teach Science is because Republican school boards won't allow it.

His reality doesn't match up with mine or my sister's.

I don't remember any sex ed after 9th grade - a lecture on the importance of condoms.

I do remember taking a science in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade - biology, chemistry, and anatomy & physiology. We never made it to the end of the A&P book where the reproductive system is always placed.

That class sucked.

I took a science every year of school except my senior one.

Mallard's full of shit.

My biology teacher was a devout Christian, given to talking about church and God during class.

When my sister took biology, she and her friends fought against the teacher teaching them evolution. With noise, I think.

It pissed me off.

Almost as much as when she said you can't take a bible to school.

There have been "unwanted pregnancies" throughout history. "Then" was never as innocent as right-wing cartoonists seem to believe.

He bugs me more than anyone I actually know, but that may be because my sister is asleep. And she's mellowed out in regards to god and science.

As for sex ed, because schools say abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent STDs, however, they're realistic and know that teenagers are horny, so if you must, wear a condom.

The devil you say!

Well, Tinsley's crazed notions of schools may not be true, per se, but they're certainly truthy.

Garsh...and Ah thought it was teh teevee and teh Internets that made priests molest kids. Turns out it wuz public ed-jew-cay-shun!

(Quick reminder: Mallard Fillmore is not about "reality." It's about reminding everyone that "they" are out to get you.)

The part I like is where he packs today's boring lecture into a little asterisk-driven area at the bottom of the page. I suppose this is progress for Tinsley; he's beginning to see that the comic by itself makes no sense, so he's attaching explanatory material at the bottom.

With luck, eventually the comic part will wither away, replaced by Mallard holding an asterisk that points to a link at some website in the right-wing noise machine.

See, my sex ed was "DON'T DON'T DON'T OH MY GOD DON'T!"

That was in the early 2000s. We are *still* having the debate over whether abstinence only works. Oh, and did I mention the high amount of STDs and the pregnant teens in my graduating class? Wow, good thing we didn't teach them anything normal about sex or it would be so much worse.

So when Tinsley says "Then", I'd love to know when "Then" is. Seriously, the 70s? 50s? What?!

Tinsley's footnote needs a footnote. What the hell is he talking about?

He's talking about what he believes to be true.

When his kids were in school, if has kids, I hope for their sake he didn't do this kind of shit.

I heard STDs and teenage pregnancies go up where students are taught that sex is evil unless they're married - they don't know about contraception, though they really should.

I don't remember a big sex talk, just a big "you're becoming a woman" talk. Sex ed from mom was gradual, and in the last couple years, I've taken to asking her questions about sex - things no school would ever cover.

But the school told us to wear a condom if we had sex. And we got a few stapled pages about preventing STDs - it said abstinence is the only 100% way, but wear a condom if you do it.

I think we have teenage pregnancies because we're in the south, and well, get an abortion? I never!

I like his wording with his "footnote". How does one determine an "unwanted pregnancy"?

Is there some significance to the "then" teacher being 65-ish and the "now" teacher being 45-ish?

That must be a LOT of sex education if it's mutually exclusive with English, history, AND science. The school that does replace 3 normal classes with 1 year-round sex ed class will have a graduating class of veritable Don Juans.

I had the honor of attending high school in the state with the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country. Our sex ed level was close to nothing, so it was left up to the parents. Apparently they didn't do a stellar job.

Judging by this week's Mallard cartoons, the teachers today are lazy, short-haired goons who care about 2 things: game shows, and angrily teaching kids about sex. It's a good thing we aren't paying them anything!

We have a serious education problem in this country, and the things Tinsley focuses on are lazy teachers, and an overabundance of sex ed? I can't wait to see what fictional problem he takes on next. Maybe it will be teachers forcing kids to study the Koran in lieu of American History, or kids being taught that gay people are human beings, or kids getting uppity because they aren't being paddled anymore. Any serious discussion about our education system would touch all these topics, and I hope Tinsley continues his constructive effort.

The "then" teacher is a spinster.

The "now" teacher is a lesbian.

It all makes sense now.

All public school systems allow parents to write a note to get their kid out of those classes (unfortunately, I can't say the same for the ones that still require bible classes). But most parents don't. And they usually don't bother to talk to the kids themselves at all about anything, and very rarely have the information correct, which is why the school system would have even stepped in in the first place.

Aren't these very same parents that super-awesome-fantastically-prepared generation that doesn't get STDs or pregnant?

On the bright side, he's not stupid enough to tell us to google anything or put up any links to studies because those would prove him wrong.
