That damned Foundation

What's Mallard raving about today?

Sonia Sotomayor, Wisdom.

The last person from whom you'd want to take advice on either wisdom or what you should say is Mallard Fillmore.

For example, a wise waterfowl would realize that, by the time he started bleating about this incident, it would have long since played itself out.

Mallard Fillmore: exactly like regular wingnut talking points, only two weeks later.

That this tripe was able to get syndicated boggles the mind.

Compared to Mallard, the proportions make it look like she's the size of Andre the Giant.

Also, she has an uncanny resemblance to Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman.

The rules of misquotation:

Axiom 1. Any quotation that can be altered will be.
Corollary 1C: Small changes can have a big impact (or: what a difference an a makes).
Corollary 1D: If noted figures don't say what needs to be said, we'll say it for them.

Chop and edit the quote from Ms. Sotomayor, and presto! Republican talking point. The full quote and context is just so much less controversial, so where's the fun in that? Journalistic integrity, what's that?

We should at least give Tinsley his due for this act of genius.

This strip should be memorialized as The Apotheosis of the Ellipsis.

It takes a rare master to transform a simple punctuation mark so dramatically into an outright, patent lie.

Huh. His Sotomayor caricature actually looks halfway human. Not terribly good, mind you, but at least it's a cut above the usual Freudian Monstrosities Tinny hands us.

And y'know, Tinny, all things considered, when it comes to cases about Sexual and Racial discrimination, which is, y'know, WHAT MS> SOTOMAYOR WAS TALKING ABOUT, I'd certainly think a smart Latina woman would better be able to understand the situation than a privileged white male could. See, believe it or not, "White Male" is not in fact the Universal Norm; it has its own set of biases and preconceived notions most of the time, and that means when situations that fall outside those perameters come to their attention, they might not be as ready to handle them as those closer to the situations in question.

Whee, out of context quotes are fun!

At least he left "I would hope that" in; I was worried he would just jump to "a wise Latina woman would reach a better conclusion than a white male."

Kind of like how every single right-winger played Rev. Wright's "God damn America" clip, cut off without finishing the sentence "for killing innocent people."

Today's "comic" translated:
"A wise Latina would never say anything that can be taken out of context."

Or, more succinctly: "Latinas should STFU!"

(Again, I recommend y'all to read what she actually said. It's some thoughtful stuff!)

What the hell is up with right wingers drawing Sotamayor like racist anti-Japanese propaganda circa 1944?

I least they haven't shown here eating the flesh of live, white American babies. Yet.

Glad ducky deemed it fit to give himself a Foundation, there.

Duckie must be ambidextrous. He's able to expound racism, thinly disguised as straw quasi-psuedo-wisdom, WHILE masturbating.

TEH AWSOME!!

Michael, you make the mistake of assuming the visual elements of this comic strip ever have anything to do with each other.

I guess we should be thankful that he didn't go ahead and reduce the Sotomayor quote to "Latina woman [...] better [...] than [...] white male".
