Bruce doesn't like appliances that are smarter and more useful than he is. (That's why he had his toilet torn out. By God, if anyone's going to swallow and then pour out excrement...)
Ok? So is he trying to complain that modern phones are overly gimmicky and should instead focus on trying to provide clearer coverage or fewer dead zones? If so then he could have done it a few other ways.
What kind of @$$ goes up to a phone saleman and asks if the device makes calls? And what kind of bigger @$$ draws the strip where the salesman is assuming that the average consumer doesn't want that feature?
They push the other features because by default, a telephone makes calls and they assume that you, the consumer, have an adequately high enough IQ to know this.
It's a joke I've heard before, and it wasn't even really funny then. Oh well, I guess progressives have no sense of humor.
Somebody could write an app that generates a Mallard Fillmore strip every day for your phone, using templates and random word generators and a duck staring at you from a bean bag in front of a TV. I mean, if that's not already what we're seeing.
Wow, he finally got peeled himself away from the TV, just so he could annoy someone who works for a living. I'm sensing a based-on-the-author's-actual-experiences vibe here.
Anyway, there's already a rightward-leaning story about anthropomorphic animals who don't get the modern technology the kids these days use. That's Pluggers, and it's way better-drawn. Stick to your strengths, Bruce: parroting talking points and posting bail.

Why do I get the feeling that Tinsley just saw a smartphone commercial on TV?
What a hack. Maybe Tinsley can talk to the creators of Marmaduke or Garfield for some fresh ideas.

Translated from Tinselyspeak...
"Technology scares me. Just like everything else."
How many doughy, balding white men do you know that work at "Smart Phone_" stores?
Based on his prior efforts to depict youths and/or ethnics, though, I guess I should count my blessings.

How sad ... how SAD is it when you're a wannabe PLUGGER?
Serioiusly, is this the best the Fox News crowd can come up with for comics? A failed Plugger?
Today, on "Old Man Tinsley Shakes His Fist at..."
