The only aggressors and would-be tyrants I see are the goose-stepping horde of foxbot teabaggers. Fuck off, Tinsh.

Everyone else, except for Anonymelonfucker and Anonyconcerntroll, have a peaceful and reflective Memorial Day

Here's hoping for a Memorial Day one day when it is all memory, with the troops home and safe with their families.

Now, I am thinking this is just me looking at it oddly or the drawing is off. But it almost looks like Mallard is giving the plaque or whatever he's holding a raised eyebrow/skeptical/incredulous look as though what was written here was wrong or strange.

But I support our soldiers, that also means that I don't want them used like toy soldiers or sent to die in wars that have no ultimate purpose. We're seeing shades of the Vietnam problem again, lack of popular support from the indiginous people, lack of an overall strategy, and simply the fact that we are justifying staying out of the argument of sunken costs.

And what's Batshit's idea of "defending civilization" and "expressing gratitude?"

...Military service? Oh, hell, no. Daddy did that, so Batshit could wrap himself in it. Inheritance!

...Carrying water for corrupt men who love war because it is profitable, yet likewise refused to serve when called upon, claiming "other priorities?" DING DING DING.

Wow, Tinny's quoting a liberal! "Niebuhr's perspective had a great impact on many liberals, who came to support a "realist" foreign policy. His influence has been acknowledged by such recent leaders of American foreign policy as Jimmy Carter, Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as John McCain."

(Okay, he did eventually become so anti-communist that he hated Joe McCarthy for not going far enough, but that was kind of an outlier position of his)

He was responsible for this:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can change, And wisdom to know the difference."

Yeah, that's Tinny's philosophy in a nutshell. Except for all of it. "Jim Beam grant me the stupor to pass out into after I whine and scream hatred at everybody who doesn't think exactly like me, and never let me notice my hypocrisy."

"If we should perish, the ruthlessness of the foe would be only the secondary cause of the disaster. The primary cause would be that the strength of a giant nation was directed by eyes too blind to see all the hazards of the struggle; and the blindness would be induced not by some accident of nature or history but by hatred and vainglory."

See, the thing is, Tinsley isn't using this strip to honor the fallen so much as he is to emphasize how fucking awesome he thinks war is. Granted, this is a problem with the holiday in general that goes well beyond hacktastic wingnut cartoonists, but that doesn't mean it's not distasteful.

Won't Tinsley be mad about the 2 week delay. He could've used this strip to bash Obama for doing exactly what George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush did, take a vacation during Memorial Day. (even though the president will still be giving a speech at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery). The right-wing fake outrage machine has been in high-gear over this one for about a week now.

"Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea.

...In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

...America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.

Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield.

Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose.

No, Tinsley, you do not get to spend 364 days complaining about social services, and civil rights, then, spend Memorial Day complaining that we do not defend those things! You spend every fucking day telling us that we should accept every enormity shoved up our asses by the Republicans, and that anything that says otherwise should be censored! You never support fighting for anything that would help us, or against anything that hurts us! Censorship, spying on civilians, pogroms, and absolutism--all of which you demand in every area of our lives--are the cornerstones of aggressive dictatorships, and true terrorism! You, and all of your censor friends are terrorists: You want to destroy everyone's fun, and make him as miserable as yourselves! I would, happily, fight you to Hell to protect our rights!

Word Verification: Fornbr, Tinsley is a horrible monster, I am too angry to connect those two things.

Charles Schulz (Peanuts) was a decorated staff sergeant in WWII, and while justifiably proud of his war record -- and while as politically conservative as Tinsley is -- he didn't waste his cartooning time rubbing his readers' faces in the righteousness of his service. If anything, he gently mocked it (think of Snoopy's mock-heroism as the WWI flying ace).

Tinsley isn't using this strip to honor the fallen so much as he is to emphasize how fucking awesome he thinks war is.

Precisely.

"...a civilization, however imperfect..."

Heeeyy -- by endorsing this quote, is Brucie saying America ISN'T PERFECT???

FASCIST!!! COMMUNIST!!! NAZI!!! AMERICA-HATER!!!

(Hey, that was easy -- I can see why Brucie and his ilk do it so much.)

And oh, by the way: The cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations just hit one trillion dollars. I look forward to Mallard reporting that during his next broadcast.

pssst! Hey, duck! Tin's doing his big annual lip-service blahblah. The least you could do is look up from whatever dumbass video game you're playing!

Alternatively, he's showing respect by not staring blankly out at us.

That's supposed to be a plaque? I thought it was an iPad knockoff from some Korean manufacturer that uses triangles in place of Apple's trademarked logo.

The more I think about this strip, the angrier I become. This country hasn't fought a "defensive" war in sixty-five years, and no, I don't count "the war on terrorism". So who's threatening to bring "tyranny" to our country ... maybe someone about yea-tall, with a Kenyan father and a head like a brown parsnip?
