That damned Belief

What's Mallard raving about today?

President Obama, Debt.

Given that Mallard Fillmore did not say anything while the debt was being run up, he has no standing to criticize now.

Getting up on my soapbox for a bit here, this has never been about debt or Government Spending. If so, the national conversation would have started when the debt started piling up and not on January 20, 2009.

This is and always has been about who benefits from Government Spending and now that a Democrat is in office, Republicans worry that Government Spending might not benefit the right people (them and their direct financial contributors) at which point it has to be shut down.

I'm going to say it right now: when the Super Commission fails at its work, the spending cut triggers kick in, and the GOP introduce a Bill to restore Defense Spending (because, don't you support the Troops?)...anyone who does not immediately and without qualification denounce them and their actions is never allowed to speak about deficit spending ever again. Because you don't get to care about it, but only until it affects one of your sacred cows. Because then you're just a hypocrite.

Ah-HAH!!! I KNEW it!! The debt is all OBAMA'S fault!! He's been keeping the country in debt DELIBERATELY!! He WANTS us to be in debt!! He's trying to DESTROY THE COUNTRY because he HATES AMERICA!!! This comic strip PROVES IT!!!11!!1

At least, that's what I would say if I were one of those gullible fools who think that Bruce Tinsley is a courageous truth-teller and that "Mallard Fillmore" is funny.

Trying to come up with something witty, but, like Brews, I got nothing.

Unlike Tinsh, I'm honest enough to admit it, though.

Haha, it's funny because Obummer totally ran up all that debt! Haha!

What? Oh.

Haha, it's funny because LOOK AT HIS CHIN!

Just to clarify, my outrage isn't over the political message presented in this strip, it's over the total ineptness of the attempt to present it.

Seriously? The President vs. The Parthenon in a Silent Thinking Contest? SUCH DYNAMIC ACTION!

Because American Exceptionalism is... good?

Everything about this strip is wrong.

1. American has Exceptionally low taxes,
Exceptionally high concentration of wealth.
Exceptionally poor support for the unemployed, and
Exceptionally expensive healthcare.

2. "American exceptionalism" refers to the concept that rules of law that apply to every other nation don't apply to the USA, such as the ban on wars of aggression. It's been expanded to include the concept that we're just the best at everything and more moral than anyone else. I can't see how the rest of the world keeps from laughing in our face, except of course for that exceptional military budget.

No doubt; we've invaded places on flimsier pretexts (Our Mr. Tinshley even claims to have objected, although apparently there was too much reality TV to be grossed out by to bother mentioning it at the time). And that is pretty exceptional, definitely.
