That damned Halftime Show

What's Mallard raving about today?

Tim Tebow

What if Tim Tebow was Muslim. You can just imagine the weeks long tirade Mallard would go on for being open about his religion.

Oh, and Mallard? Free speech gives Tim Tebow the same right to wear his religion on his sleeve as it gives anyone else to criticize him.

Why are Christians so thin-skinned?

Ugh. The other day, my local paper ran an article on Tebow by one Jennifer Marshall of the Heritage Foundation titled "Why Tim Tebow Keeps Smiling" -- though it could just as easily have been titled "Tim Tebow: Portrait of a Martyr". It was the usual assortment of right-wing Christian victimization and self-righteousness, designed to allow Ms. Marshall's like-minded readers to wallow in the smug certainty that they're better than those who don't subscribe to their religion.

To address your question, though, DaveyK: The thickness of a Christian's skin is in direct proportion to the strength and sincerity of his/her faith.

I've been savoring the vicious attacks on Tebow at TBogg (and that one episode of Squidbillies), but didn't really understand why it should so concern me, let alone bring out the worst in me...until I read Deadspin.com's Why People Who Hate Tim Tebow Hate Tim Tebow:

"I grew up in the first Golden Age of Religious Hypocrisy (we're currently living in the second), with Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart disgracing themselves because they loved pussy and skimming from the collection plate more than they loved the Lord. I am conditioned by my upbringing to regard all outward displays of faith with a healthy dose of skepticism, and I don't think that's a bad thing. History has proven time and again that the people who actively flaunt their faith usually end up being full of shit.

"Tim Tebow may be the World's Most Perfect Christian. He may bless every sneeze and have successfully abstained from jerking off his whole adult life (not likely). But I've seen plenty of supposedly perfect Christians in my time that end up being the FREAKIEST F****RS ON EARTH, so you'll excuse me if I choose to believe that Tebow secretly watches hentai alien octopus porn when no one is looking. Here's some idiot yammering on about Tebow being a great role model for his kid. Dude, you don't KNOW Tim Tebow. Nobody knows anybody, not that well. All you know is the Tebow brand, and that isn't enough. Seriously, how many times are people going to be suckered into the myth of the Perfect Sports Role Model?

"Not only is it OK to root against Tim Tebow, it's practically your duty as cynical American. Hating on Tebow means rebelling against the same media bullshit generator that made superhumans out of the likes of Tiger Woods and Brett Favre."

Whereas Tinsley keeps his mouth glued to the media poop nozzle that he claims to despise, slurping on it like a calf on the udder.

Why are Christians so thin-skinned?

It's in the job description.

I took this to be more about the current debate about Tebow's quarterbacking skills, which has become especially inane (but it doesn't stop the duck from soaking it up in typical splayed-crotch fashion).

This would also be typical of the lazy Tinsley's habit of assuming that everybody else shares his interests (no matter how trivial) and gets what his petty grievances are. I guess I follow the NFL enough to actually converge with the Tin Mind on this one.

This such utter bullshit. I live in Oklahoma and the local stations are now carrying all the Denver games because of Tebowmania. The guy is probably a snake-oil salesman but he's damn good at it, and if he wants to fleece idiots into believing that he walks on water to make a buck, I say, more power to him.

wv: ratedr: The types of movies that Tim Tebow has never seen, haha.

I really don't understand the Tebow phenomenon. Since when have professional athletes who are Christian not flaunted their faith by pointing skyward when things are going their way, thanking God and/or Jesus when they win, and often wearing enormous crosses outside their uniforms (in baseball, at least?). I mean, granted, the vast majority of players before Tebow who've done it tend to be brown or black but oh wait now I get it it's because he's white, isn't it? That's why people want to beatify him. And it's certainly why Drinky loves him extra super much.

What does this have to do with politics?

Or anything?

Yes, folks, when Jesus said all that stuff about not praying in the marketplace, he was just cracking a parable. You should pray loudly in front of as many people as you can find. It's like the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tog, I think it may have been TBogg's place that gave me the perfect term for those poor, powerless, persecuted Christians: Martyrbation.

I don't share Tebow's beliefs, but I deplore the hatred expressed against him based on his beliefs. He's not hurting anyone or anything, unlike a Mike Vick, say, who tortured dogs to death. Yet the commentators slobber over Vick's "courage" in coming back to the NFL for tens of millions of dollars.

Davey, speaking of Muslims, there was a Muslim in the NBA a few years ago, Mahmoud Abdul Raouf (formerly Chris Jackson). There was a huge controversy because he refused to stand and salute the flag during the national anthem (Oh, the Horror!). The league finally made him at least stand up during the anthem. Imagine the furor if the league made Tebow stop doing all his antics.

People go for public displays of loving Jesus because it's a lot easier than living like Jesus.

P.S. Martyrbation. FTW!

We must be getting close to Christmas, because NOW he's saying nothing about Christmas. You'd think he'd at least talk about not putting your Tebow in a reindeer suit.

It looks like Tebow vs. Dog Killer Vick is the latest rightie talking point. This is the third different place on the internet I've seen with someone whining about the "hatred" of Tebow contrasted with purported love for Ronnie Mexico.

This shit is completely made up. If someone points out that showboating in the name of one's professed faith is still showboating, where does that equate to "hatred" outside the fevered imagination of people like our Anonyconcerntroll? And I don't know anyone who likes Michael freaking Vick.

In short, Brews, Mallard, Mallard's crotch, and Anonyconcerntroll are evidently all bathing in the same spiked kool-aid.

Waaaaaaaaaaah! Those mean old liberal humanists keep picking on us poor widdle Christians! Let's see now, if it were gays or minorities that were offended these same self righteous people would be telling them that they don't have a right to not be offended. I'm afraid that goes for Conservative Christians as well.

Alternate Universe Dubya says "I invaded Iraq because my neighbor's DOG told me to!" and is immediately hospitalized, then impeached.

Earth 616 Dubya says "I invaded Iraq because GOD told me to!" is seen as a wise Christian, retains direct access to nuclear weapons.

@Bill the Splut: Actually, we're Earth-1218, although I'm sure the Shrub of 616 did say the same thing as ours.

Hey, I just submitted "Martyrbation" to the Urban Dictionary. I suggest y'all try using it widely - it's a brilliant term!
