That damned Word

What's Mallard raving about today?

Frankly, I don't know.

The language of this makes it pretty hard to understand what Mallard is getting at, but I think he's suggesting that he doesn't believe Republicans, in the wake of their disastrous 2012 Election results, need to re-package their message (let alone change their positions). Mallard is arguing for the status quo, in the apparent hope that if they just shout their beliefs loudly one more time, this time everyone will get it and we'll all become Republicans.

Because, you know, it's not that their policies are wrong, it's just that everyone else's attitude toward their policies is wrong.

And one wonders how they led themselves to ignore all available facts and believe they were about to score a huge Electoral victory in 2012?

Americans reject the substantive positions of today's "conservatives" when they are presented without labels. For example, most Americans think women should be in charge of their own bodies, regardless of whether they're personally in favor of abortion in their own case.

So naturally "Mallard Fillmore" blames America's rejection of "conservatives" on liberals labelling them with harsh words; that's easier than facing reality.

I do believe the last line of today's strip is the truest thing ever to appear in "Mallard Fillmore". And as usual, the truthfulness is completely unintentional.

Republicans have worked so hard to tarnish their own brand. Why waste all that work? We should just call them "Republicans" and see how long it takes before they get offended at hearing people say it.

It's simpler than that. Tinsley's basically saying that liberals are mean and like to label people.

Savor the irony, but realize that conservatives actually believe this.

"...that if they just shout their beliefs loudly one more time, this time everyone will get it and we'll all become Republicans."

And if that doesn't work, there's always voter suppression.

Forget the petty sniveling of those parents in Newtown, today -- Tinsley is being persecuted, dammit!

@AndrewJ -- You do realize this blog is about Mallard Fillmore, don't you? If you want a current events blog, you're in the wrong place.
