Those damned issues

What's Mallard raving about today?

Senator Barack Obama, Issues, Divisive Rhetoric.

You can see where Mallard is coming from.

After all, if Barack Obama were to raise the level of discourse out of the sewer it would threaten Mallard's livlihood.

If the text takes up three times as much space as the art in a comic strip, then you're doing something wrong. And have you noticed that when there's only one person, there are never any word balloons, just free-floating text?

Honestly, why this is more syndicated than Prickly City is a mystery. Say what you will about the writing, but at least the author cares enough to take the time and effort to draw SCENERY. Geez.

Again, even when presented with a wealth of potential heavy-duty satirical ammo, Tinny picks the pea-shooter...and pops himself in the foot.

Damn, look at all that blank space. I guess this is Tinny's response to complaints about earlier strips, in which he crammed text into tight spaces to the point it couldn't be read.

...Or maybe he's just a slob who doesn't bother to even sketch out the strip first.

(Did you catch the sweet April Fool's Day slapdown of Mallard Fillmore by one of Tinsley's fellow cartoonists? Don't miss it!)

I've always thought the answer to this is obvious: MF is a plant.

Think about it: You're a card-carrying member of the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy (a.k.a. a "newspaper editor"). You'll feeling constant pressure to provide "balance" to all those blatantly pro-liberal strips that fill the rest of your comics page (e.g. Doonesbury, or Blondie) So what'd you do?

Simple: You start running MF.

Think about it: It's perfect. One the one hand, you can now obviously claim "Whattaya mean bias? We have a real right-wing strip right there at the top of page two??" While on the other hand, you're running a strip that does more to ridicule and discredit wingnut/neocon positions than anything you could ever hope to do on your editor page.

I mean, come on. What would you prefer? Something well-written, or insightful. Or, god forbid actually funny?

God I love Ces Marciuliano.

It doesn't help that "Mallard" has also been around longer than "Prickly City," which began in mid-2004.

The sad thing that everyone already knows is that getting any of the candidates to say "where each candidate stands on the issues" (who is he quoting?) is like pulling teeth out of a duck.

He could have put a lousy caricature of any of the candidates in there, and it would ring as true. They all tend to describe their own positions in broad generalities, while condemning their opponents for having specific plans to ruin the nation. "My 'Make Things Better' plan speaks to the majority of Americans who want to make things better, while my opponents' plans will kill your puppy!"

And yet several conservatives I know think MF is well-written and witty. Denial, maybe?

There should be a picture of Mallard in the middle.

No, just shows their level of intelligence and wit.
