That damned Ideal

What's Mallard raving about today?

Colorblind Society.

Aside from one statement, taken largely out of context and hardly even controversial when considered in light of statements from past Supreme Court Nominees, Mallard has not presented one shred of evidence to suggest that Sonia Sotomayor is not qualified nor the best person available.

His entire argument against her is, quite literally: She's a Latina, therefore she must not be a qualified candidate.

It's really hard to understand why Republicans have a 5% favorable rating among Latinos.

Is this still about Sotomayor? I thought Tinsley was just wandering off into an unrelated affirmative action whine. It's not as though his brain is particularly good at sustained trains of thought.

When Mallard says "colorblind," it's safe to say that he means "all-white."

The idea of a colorblind society is excellent, the problem is that we have a lot of things we need to deal with before we can claim to have one. A big issue simply has to do with socioeconomic levels. Look at rates of poverty among different ethnic groups, even with the greatest will and strongest skills you're still going to have trouble if your parents both work to keep the bills paid and if they don't have time to help you learn. And, poor areas mean low property values and taxes, which also means that public libraries are going to either be horribly underfunded or nonexistent within easy distance. If I want to learn I can feed my brain at a library or by studying online (bad data aside I can at least have the CHANCE). Lower taxes also mean that schools aren't adequately funded, so fewer resources per kid, harder to attract quality teachers, not to mention the other big issue.

CRIME. Low income areas have higher crime rates, especially violent crime. This creates a few issues, one is that with easier ways to make money, why should I care about an education, I can get good money now. At a young age kids feel immortal so they don;t think about their own deaths, and if the deathtoll is high enough they might view it as inevitable.

My point is that a colorblind society has to account for the fact that one color held the other down in the dirt for many generations, and only recently allowed them to attend the same educational institutions. To ignore poverty, to ignore the other issues that exist in our society is to create a situation where we deny others the tools to succeed and then call them incompetant when they cannot succeed.

C'mon, Mallard, scream "Chinese eat dogs!" at us some more. Show us another terrorist-profiling chart where the choices are a little white girl, an elderly Asian lady, and Osama bin Laden.

"Remember that ideal I always mock, right up to the point I think I can use it against liberals?"

I really don't mind affirmative action. I mean, we enslaved black people for about 200 years, and then tried to keep them separate from us for years after that. I think giving minorities advantages in hiring sort of pales in comparison to that.

I think "Straw Man" should be tagged on here as well. Because what liberal would actually say what Noseworthy does?

Other than knee-jerk broad-spectrum bitterness, what the hell is Blallard's point? This thing looks like a joke - there's a set up and a punch line. But humor is based on a juxtaposition of the joke subject with reality. This is just the fantasy raving of a perpetually angry wingnut.

Oh, come on, Tinshley. Everyone knows that Mallard was hired as a sop to Green-Waterfowl-Americans. Same as you got your gig because editors wanted to fill the "talentless, humorless drunken reactionary" niche.

Factinista is right, in Mallardworld a colorblind society means the best candidate always gets the job, which of course is always a white male. Anyone else and it's affirmative action, which of course is racist.

HOLY CRAP!!! I know it's off subject, but I found a worse characature of Obama than Tinkley's. You gotta see this one!

Sorry, not computer-literate enough to insert a link....

Neither Alito nor Roberts had as much experience as a judge as does Sotomayor.

She's been a prosecutor and a civil litigator as well. So Tinkley can't be talking about Sotomayor; he's complaining (rather late) that Alito and Roberts got their job because they are white male Catholic corporatists.

Translation of today's strip:

"Boo hoo! Us poor white guys can't get a break, even though we're better qualified at everything, because all you mean ol' liberals only care about affirmative action! We're victims! VICTIMS, I tells ya!! Waaahhhh!"

Yawn.

For someone so pro-colorblind in Indiana, you'd think he'd have more strips about a certain group that operates in that state. You know, the one triply fond of a certain alphabet letter?

Apparently it's only wrong to be racist if the non-white gets an advantage.

Sad thing is, in Sotomayor's case, she didn't even get one. She worked harder than most to get where she is today.

What, and risk losing his membership?

I know you can't be referring to AAA, because there's no way they'd let him in!

Wow, no punchline OR a coherent point! The rare Ducky ....bifecta? Meh, google's too far away.

I get the feeling that this started out as, "Sotomayor is only being nominated cause she's a latina!!!!*" but then Ducky collapsed from those 80 ounces, ...err, hours of research and it got sent in half done.

That IS an exceptionally bad cartoon, casual. Apparently, the Noid, who lives on a efficiency balcony located conveniently on some ornamental columns, wants to trade his Snood to the mayor from The Point, narrated by Ringo Starr.

*Subtext: she can't possibly be qualified to be a Supreme Court judge, because she's a Latina, which as we all know, are only good at wearing slutty outfits and being sassy.

The interesting thing about affirmative action is that the criticisms sort of highlight racism in our culture. If we assume that a minority got a job or got into a college due to affirmative action automatically then doesn't that imply racism? I mean most people don't look at a white person in college and go 'legacy' or that the white guy got hired because he and the guy in HR are frat brothers. Yet, many people seem willing to think that a minority can ONLY get in with an edge.

This would seem to prove that racism is still alive and well in our culture.
