That damned Car Alarm

What's Mallard raving about today?

Car Alarms.

There's a Socialist Fascist in the White House, and you're complaining about car alarms?

Why do you hate America, Mallard?

It would almost be a good strip.

Just leave out the Wooo... and the ... at the end. Because for someone who sure hates hippies, he works awfully hard at having speech bubbles that resemble someone stoned.

It is a Sunday strip though. We'll be smelling a dead horse again tomorrow.

Hey! He almost told a joke!

I'm taking this as a sneak preview of Tinsley's future. There's going to be some point where the fear of brimstone finally outweighs the denial (or the audience simply dwindles to a trickle) and he tries to go mainstream.

That will surely be funnier than the strip itself.

"Airline food and the lines at the DMV, amIright, folks? You've been a great audience!"

WV: nonbars; "Joke about Tinny being a drunk, amIright?"

Are there really that many car alarms in East Drunkard, Indiana?

Again with the "Wooo...". Does Tinsley believe this is the sound a duck makes when it's fascinated or bewildered?

I'm guessing Brucie's just "taking a break" with this strip so as to psych himself up for a 2-week temper tantrum over Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Not lazily drawn", Rewinn? It's just Mallard and "WOOP WOOP" words, with no backgrounds! In a Sunday formatted strip, no less. Has Tinsley lowered your standards that much? Oh wait, he did replace his newspaper with a coffee in one of the panels...

I'd like to think his "Wooo" is in the manner of Ric Flair.

Michael-Now I can't unsee the coffee...not that it matters, because I try not to think about Mallard Fillmore that much.

wv: boote-a classy boot

Michael - My bad! Tinshley's just a victim of the soft bigotry of no expectations.

When will we stop oppressing him ???

That fourth panel just looks odd. What's with the smirk? Do car alarms make him happy? Is the coffee just that good?

And for that matter, is the entirety of his daily routine just walking around all day with a newspaper/coffee?

As usual, the Mallard/Doonesbury comparison speaks volumes. This is just foolish crap. But Sunday's Doonesbury gave us a thoughtful and very honest admission of what is going on in the Obama White House. Rather than cover up for the President he obviously likes, he's courageously criticized his inexplicable drive to escalate the war in Afganistan.

Oh, come ON, Factinista! You've been here long enough to recognize that smirk.

First, Mallard's looking at the reader. That is his standard "I'm an arrogant asshole who bobs his head to Rush Limbaugh's oral fartings, and therefore your superior" smirk. Second, Tinsley had to draw Mallard repeatedly throughout the strip, and he has a limited stable of "poses" to regurgitate---as limited as anything else about Bruce Tinsley. I'm really surprised he doesn't cut and paste everything a la "Day By Day.")

If you read Doonesbury at GoComics, you can enjoy the Dittoheads exploding with glee in the comments because they assume that Trudeau has turned on Hopey-Changey. They just cannot process legitimate criticism that isn't complete blind hatred.

(P.S.: I'm sorry, but Afghanistan is the war we actually need to finish. Anyone who honestly thought Obama would pull a magic wand out of his ass and make Afghanistan go way-way should stay the hell away from politics until they're mature enough to vote responsibly. Thank you.)

Oh, trust me, NTA, I do know that smirk. It's just that he usually uses it when he tears down his strawman of the day and delivers his sad excuse for a punchline. Having it in the middle when all he's doing is holding some coffee looks strange, even by this comic's standards.

Car alarms? What is this, 2003? I mean, a few years ago they were so pervasive the birds would chirp in the same pattern as those four-step alarms.

But people finally worked out that the only thing car alrms are good for is making your neighbors hate you. And now even the birds have given up on them.

On another note: Not THAT Anonymous, I respect the position that Afghanistan is the war we need to finish. But I don't believe it is finishable in any palatable way, and it hasn't been for a long time - maybe not since Bin Laden was allowed to slip out of Tora Bora.

And it looks to me like the president sees this, or at least suspects it. So he hopes a better answer will come to him, or some new piece of information will present itself showing the way to a decent conclusion. But I doubt it's out there.

We're going to need to figure out the least awful endgame, and I couldn't say what it is at this point.

Wooo.... Mallard's smirk is nothing more than a tracing over of the standard Sunday "title" filler panel, with the usual microphone replaced by a cup of coffee....
