That damned Bribe

What's Mallard raving about today?

Senator Reid.

Remember how Mallard raved against Republicans for running the debt up in record fashion?

Yeah, me neither.

I don't think it's Reid and taxpayer money being used to bribe senators for something we don't want.

In the case of health care reform, pork holds nothing compared to the profits of insurance companies to buy senators and weaken the reform. And the methods insurance companies use to obtain their money are far lower on the ethical scale than taxes. The pork doesn't go to the Dems for the most part anyways, taxpayer money is ironically funneled to "anti-pork" red states.

I am compelled to repeat my earlier post about how it's quite all right for a Republican to do these things, but not a Democrat. It's apparently in the Constitution somewhere.

"Bribing other senators"--in reality, making deals--is how Washington works, Bruce. It is how Washington has ALWAYS worked, including those magical periods when the GOP controlled everything. In fact, it's how US foreign policy works, although "works" may be the wrong word to use there. If you don't understand that, you have no business even discussing politics.

"Stuff you don't want"--oh, that's cute. Health care reform, correct? No: people want that. What people didn't want was an endless war/occupation. You yourself claim to be among them. Yet now you choose to speak up?

And just like that, we're right back to "it's okay when..."

For a new years resolution, how about learning basic cartoon layout? You have one huge panel to work with, yet a speech bubble is squished next to someone's head so badly that even the colorist couldn't fill the whole thing in.

How can you be so concerned about political concessions when the Senate Majority Leader has a finger that can think on its own?! How many knuckles does that thing have, anyway?

It makes sense when we realize that "you" in this case refers to Mallard's readers, the 23% who still swallow anything that emerges from the talking point e-mail that fuels Tin's still-living brain cells. They've never cared about the majority, just whoever toes the party line.

Sorry, but that's not the issue. The issue it that liberals are Tax-and-spend'ers, which is evil. Conservatives are Spend-and-not-worry-about-where-the-mony-is-going-to-come-from-just-make-excuses-of-how-not-supporting-our-agenda-is-unAmerican-and-treasonous-and-if-it-breaks-the-government-even-better-ha-ha-we're-in-power-suck-it, which is good, after all, they have Jesus on their side.

Piling up massive debt to pass on to your children and grandchildren isn't evil (Ronnie proved that, right Dick?). Lying, shredding the Constitution, starting wars willy-nilly, and blasphemy aren't evil. The only things in this world that are evil are Taxes and anything that liberals do. NYAHH!!!

Not only Washington, but all of collective society is founded upon negotiation and bargaining.

It's not mere historical coincidence that quid pro quo is a Latin phrase.

Tinshley's just upset that his attempts at bribery didn't result in him weaving his way home that one night. Or that other night. Or ...

When Tom DeLay not only broke Congressional rules to keep the Medicare vote open for three hours while he gathered votes not by only by the legal and customary method of offering support for projects benefiting the votes in members' districts, but in addition promising $100,000 cash to the son of Representative Nick Smith of Michigan ...

... which would have been a felony bribe were the Attorney General anyone but Alberto Gonsalez ...

... remember what Ducky said about that?

Here it is, in full:

Speaking of bribery: Anyone remember how Brucie tore John Boehner a new one for handing out bribe checks from the tobacco industry on the floor of the House during a vote on tobacco subsidies?

Anyone...?

I've got nothing to add to this analysis (except maybe another "WTF's with the finger?") so....

Here's an interesting blog posting posing the question: “Why is it so hard to create a successful conservative satire strip?” which leans heavily on the unfunniness of Mallard Fillmore to make its points.
