That damned tip

What's Mallard raving about today?

Stocks, 2008.

"Father Time 2008" and his stock tips...also known as Jim Cramer.

Hey, remember when the those damn liberals wanted to "save" your Social Security funds by investing them in the stock market?

...And by "those damn liberals," I mean the GOP.

Carry on, Bruce.

You know, while these year-end strips are typically lame, they also have the trappings of actual comics. They're not the usual Steel Reserve-fueled hate excreta, these have identifiable jokes. Some of them even have the recognizable setup-punchline formulation, indicating that Tinsley has reached the level of a Beetle Bailey or Hi and Lois.

Maybe this was his New Year's resolution - quit drinking while cartooning. I'm sure it's one he'll be keeping for many, many minutes.

Speaking of resolutions, I could do with more of the brilliant explications of the implications of the nonsensical philosophy that leads to the insane contradictions on daily display in the strip, and knockdowns of the lameness and incompetence of the cartooning style. And perhaps a beentsy bit less of graphically detailed revenge fantasies and prolonged scenarios of how Tin gets drunk, barfs, wallows in barf, and so on and so forth.

The latter items strike me as a bit too much like the bilge fest of 'conservative' blogs, even if we generally do it better here. A clean takedown is always worth more. I'm not telling anybody what to do here, just expressing a preference. (Of course, if I've been guilty of any of these things in the past, my preference at this point is to not be reminded of it, thankyouverymuch.)

Does Tinsley not get the concept that the year personification dies when the year ends? He thinks instead that it plans to retire?

Ken, Tinsley is a sociopath. Sociopaths, by definition, do not understand the concept of death. This cartoon gives us yet another horrifying insight into Tinsley's tiny brain, and hatred of everyone--in this case, the old and poor, whom he wants, constantly, to work until they die.

Tinsley's brain looks like this: The Amygdala, Id, Reptilian Core and stolen idea resevoir are 99.9999999% of it; and the Frontal Lobe, Abstract Thought generator, Ego, Superego, and anything that controls sympathy and empathy, can, only, be seen when dyed and observed through a Tunneling Electron Microscope. One must carefully look at them, though, for they are so small that the very act of observation affects their position.

Word Verification: Sapidi, a level of stupidity far below retardation, but above Tinsley.

Well Kip, I suppose I could sit down and write a detailed exegesis of Bruce Tinsley's hack comic; comparing each joke to the other political cartoons that have done them and done them better; detail the artistic shortcuts and how they harm his integrity; produce layouts with charts and graphs and multiple sources demonstrating the wrongness of his political argument; and apply the art of psychology to determine what it all says about his worldview. Or, I can call him a drunk in a creative and amusing way, which achieves the exact same thing but wastes much less of my time.

I'm sorry if that's beneath you. Just remember that this is a mockery blog, not the New York Times Review of Books.

In other news, Wal-Mart wonders why sales are poor after they've hired greeters who are dressed in hair shirts, carry scythes, and literally talk out of their asses...

D., I'm all for the mocking. I have no problem referring to Tin's well-known propensity for 'research' and expect to mention it from time to time myself. The creepy revenge fantasies and endless descriptions of barf are what I objected to.

"Brilliant explications" and all that was just fancy talk for what we do here all the time. It's not an order, just a preference. I don't plan to keep bringing it up.

Wasn't gonna say anything...but yeah, I'm with Kip on this.

Funny thing about today's "comic" --- stock market is UP since Obama took office.

Now, we can validly object that our REAL economy is still in the tank, but if Old Year 2008 had put his investments into a broad mix of stocks, he'd be sittin' pretty.

And what took down GM was a trifecta of the collapse in private demand for vehicles, executive incompetence and excess costs due to privatized medical care; the better-managed Ford is turning a profit and other competitors from nations with strong unions and strong national health care plans are mostly getting by.

For the coming year, I shall not resolve to stop calling Bruce Tinsley lazy and a drunkard, for he is both. But I shall try to find novel and entertaining ways to do so.
