That damned sign

What's Mallard raving about today?

Cheeseburgers, profits, Signs, Grad Students.

Nice try with that first bit of text, Mallard. But cheeseburgers are not a basic requirement to run everything in society, unlike oil. As such, the comparison only reveals a lack of intelligent thought on the part of the author.

As for the second bit of text, I have no idea what the hell you are talking about.

This grad student would sooner starve than patronize a dude who named his kid after rush fucking limbaugh. That shit's child abuse.

Mallard hates the educated.

This explains everything.

Grad students are the locus of all evil in the modern world!

Grad students are responsible for the majority of wickedness that goes on across the globe.

The second panel is clearly a sign that Tinshley still yearns for the halcyon days of segregation in diners, and for some reason he thinks that's funny.

Meanwhile, he continues to demonstrate how much he hates not just the educated, but education as well. Also educators, though that's not germane to this particular strip.

Wait, dlauthor. When he says the government made him take down the sign, that's about segregation?

I thought it was just gibberish - and how can you tell just who is a grad student? I can barely tell freshmen apart from teachers most of the time.

People who never went to college can say something like that. Or people who are done with grad school. Or people who look at more years of school and start screaming.

And why is he in a student-filled area? He hates them so he knew what he was getting into.

Besides, most grad students are vegans. Dur.

Grad students are stupid.

I was against the excessive profits tax before reading this cartoon, and have since changed my mind because Tinsley was being such a cock. Congratulations, Tinsley, your cartoon finally has influence.

Kaitlyn, I'm not saying the pro-segregation aspect is necessarily a conscious thing on Tinshley's part, but c'mon. Signs refusing service to various minority groups (blacks, Jews, the Irish, etc.) in dining establishments are fairly common images in historical depictions of institutionalized racism, and government intervention was necessary to put a stop to it for good. One doesn't make a joke about that kind of thing without at least an unconscious desire to evoke images of "No Coloreds" signs.

Since when have grad students (apparently the worst of the evil libruls) raised hackles about the profits of small, local businesses? Starbucks and Wal-Mart, I can see; Dave's Diner, not so much.

I will say that the grad student character is plainly being an asshole. If you think the prices are too high at your local eatery, go somewhere else. Better yet, buy some ground beef, cheese and a bun and make it yourself - it's not exactly the most complicated recipe in the world.

And somehow I doubt that in real life, Bruce treats service people very well. "How do I know you're not making excessive profits from this double scotch? Ah, screw it, give me another."

If you google grad students cheeseburger there's an interesting report about students estimating the costs of cheeseburgers versus their selling price for a class exercise.

But it also says the average is around 10$ that students turned in, so how grad students question Dave's obscene profits could come from this, I do not know.

Ex - I doubt that study was on Tinz's mind when he scrawled this out a few weeks ago.

No, just his contempt for government and education and liberals.
