That damned Czar

What's Mallard raving about today?

Czars.

Dude was obviously not a Bush crony, or he would have gotten his obligatory sinecure/czarship.

This, by the way, is how Mallard Fillmore chooses to mark the anniversary of September 11th. By whinging the insane rantings of the Fox Propaganda Network.

You stay classy, Patriot.

While we're on the subject of 9/11, I'd like to mention that Mallard still has yet to bring up last year's anniversary. Ducky has been so fixated on hating Obama that he's completely forgotten about the greatest tragedy in our nation's history.

Bringing up 9/11 is risky, because then people start asking how the hell is it that we never got bin Laden, or what we have to show for all the money we pissed away into the pockets of Halliburton and Blackwater (not to mention the lives lost), or how it is we came to think of waterboarding as A Honored American Tradition.

Plus, there's that whole house of cards about how the Bush maladministration kept America safe after the attacks. (...You know, in spite of being warned well in advance and doing absolutely nothing...except anticipating a "Pearl Harbor type" attack with glee. Hey, wait a minute...)

It's tough to blame all that on LIBURALZ! so it's best just to ignore it and go on about...oh, I dunno...czars? BECAUSE RUSSIA HAD CZARS!!1 AND RUSSIA BECAME SOCIALIST! SEE! IT ALL FITS!!! BWAAAAAH

This comic seems more of a non-sequiter than anything else. Especially given that the term of 'Czar' has been in American politics for quite some time, going back as far, maybe farther than Mckinnely http://www.aei.org/event/1549. (yes it was used as a pejorative at that time, but it was still used)

Is he trying to claim that we have too many czars, IE too many people filling unneeded positions where we already have departments and systems in place for that? If so then his prose is clumsy and would need more setup.

Is he complaining about the use of the term Czar, alright, that kind of works but it still seems to match poorly with what he shows here.

Oh noes! Obama appoints czars!!

To those of you who don't know about the non-issue of czars, Fox News is at the forefront of pointing out that Obama has appointed 33 people into 31 so-called "czar" positions, while forgetting that W appointed 45 people into 35 positions.

Per Wikipedia, the term "czar" is simply an "informal term for certain high-level officials who direct or oversee federal operations on a given topic or who coordinate policies between different departments on a given topic." Which sounds to me like something useful. (But what do I know? I'm just a latte-sipping arugala-eating east-coast ivory-tower pinko dirty fucking hippie America-hating French-loving liberal.)

For some reason, Fox is attempting to paint "czars" -- like "empathy" -- as something bad, trying to present "czars" as representatives of a shadow government. Because, you know, Bush never did it.

The whole kerfluffle reached its peak last week when Obama had THE NERVE (he sure is uppity, isn't he?) to appoint a new czar on the same day the Glenn Beck succeeded in getting another czar, Van Jones, fired.

The sheer amount of crazy hurts.

Republicans sure do hate having Czars supposedly running the country. And they keep agitating for an anti-Obama "revolution" in which they will presumably do away with Czarist rule.

Gee, that sounds familiar.

Obama appoints undersecretaries and supervisors. The media calls them czars because it sounds scary and elicits an emotional response to those still living under the red scare.

The irony of Mallard failing to mention 9/11 in favor of FOX rantings is even more ironic since FOX had this tripe:
http://www.thefoxnation.com/politics/2009/09/09/administration-moves-downplay-911

I'm not sure why a national service and remembrance day is considered worse than a patriot day. Wait, yes I do. Because the men and women who serve have NOTHING on a patriot with a shotgun and an American flag who was far away from ground zero or the Middle East. Plus Obama thought of it.

What made American great that day wasn't a rallying bloodlust or arrogant overblown pride and screams for revenge, but the service men and women who did their jobs. Especially those government workers who went into the area to save lives. Some of them never returned home from work. They deserve this day to be for them.

Yep, the Tinsh is too addled by booze and Fox to remember the anniversary of Sept. 11, but a few months ago he sure remembered the ever-livin' snot out of the 15th anniversary of Mallard.

So we can see where his priorities are.

Next RNC/Fox talking point:

Obama wants students to matriculate!

David in NYC said...

And if they matriculate, they might become homo sapiens or even thespians.

The horror, the horror.

Well done everyone.

9/11 is mainly forgotten on the right because it has outlived it usefulness as a meme. The whole "pre-9/11, post-9/11 thinking" way of looking at the universe, now seems rather quaint. A bit like the Geneva Conventions, actually. . .

(older post deleted for horrendous grammar)

Honestly, now that the right isn't force feeding 9/11 as an all-in-one propaganda tool/racism fuel/constant excuse, I am now not afraid of commemorating the date and feel like in doing so, I'm adding kindling to some giant force that wants to turn every Muslim nation into glass.

It's sad it took so long, though. I'm sorry for everyone that died in the tragedy and the war for being used as an excuse for illegal, freedom killing activities and American-brand terrorism.

Guys, I think we should all be grateful that Tinsley has chosen to pass over 9/11 in silence. When he doesn't, we're subject to thinks like this, which may well be the Most Loathsome Mallard Fillmore Strip Ever.

I'd much rather 9/11 be forgotten..on the left as well as the right. And if anyone says otherwise, I'll give you a flame war that will make it look like kindling..

Not THAT Anonymous said...

You're a real classy guy, too, ssfan12, coming here and threatening...what? A tantrum? If you don't get your way?

Here's a little perspective, squirt: you will be forgotten long before 9-11.

sffan12 said...

No, it's that I'm sick & tired of people telling me what I can or can't say..especially concerning 9/11..

It should not only be forgotten, it should be buried into the ground of the collective conscious along with the Witch Trials of Salem & the Red Scare of the 1950s..in other words, a tool of reactionaries that should not be remembered at all..

Anonymous said...

These two statements do not play well together in a rational world. Are you Ted Rall?

should not be remembered at all..

Those who forget the past, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. You MUST be Ted Rall! If you forget September 11th, 2001, you'll also forget how it was co-opted by the PNAC scumbags to push America into war.

They certainly won't forget how well it worked.

My head's up my own ass! That makes me the smartest guy in the room, 'cause all I hear are my own farts! Hurf hurf durf!!

As a long time follower and collector of Mallard Fillmore cartoons, I was disappointed with the strip today.

This cartoon, I think, is cleverly done and the cartoonist did a suttle job of reminding us never to forget the tragedy of 9/11. This image/logo is also good design.

sffan12...Along with forgetting 9/11 I suppose you would also like us to forget the Pearl Harbor attack. Perhaps you are not aware it happened.

MartyRotten said...

Let's see...Mallard Fillmore is against czars. In 1914 (I might have the year wrong) Lenin and the communists in Russia lead the revolution to overthrow the czar.

Therefore, Mallard Fillmore is a communist.

sffan12 said...

I'm fully aware of Pearl Harbor, ty...but it wasn't used for political gain...unlike 9/11 which was used from the start..

Ah, it's the anonyshit who uses this blog on a shitty right-wing cartoon to pimp a different shitty right-wing cartoon. I'm not sure this is the same anonytroll who pops in here with the random right-wing talking points, though. But I'm done clicking on the damn links, in any event.

But whatever DID happen to that bin Laden guy, anyway? I must have missed when we succeeded in "smoking 'im out".

Good god--what a bizarre piece of information. Our resident troll is not only a fan of Tinsley's drunken burblings, he's also a "collector?" I have this mental image of him banging out his idiot missives from a filthy one-room apartment, walls plastered haphazardly with Mallard Fillmore strips cut out from the newspaper.

You may think this extrapolation is overly ungenerous. But let's face it, a self-proclaimed Mallard Fillmore collector (collector!) is already ipso facto the saddest spectacle in the world. Nothing I can say is gonna change that.

rewinn said...

Being a "collector" of Mallard Fillmore cannot be "Hard Work", since the Free Market hath decreed that only two Mallard Fillmore collections shall be printed (unlike the work of any competent cartoonist) ...

...Heck of a job, Anonymous Coward!

Strange as it is for Anonymous Coward to link to a picture of a dirty man kidnapping two cute kids, it may be a good reminder to kids that when bothered by a drunk, "call 911".

As for the graphic that anchor-baby Malkin had commissioned for her, using the WTC as the "11" in 9/11 is not a terribly creative device. I do salute its reduction of the stars in our flag to ten, representing, the states of the Old Confederacy still in Confederate hand.

Heck of a job, Anonymous Coward!

I understand why fans of George W Bush don't want to recall 9/11.

George W Bush had 7 years to catch bin Ladn and failed.

FDR got Hitler in only 4 years, and Hitler had a MUCH bigger army.

The difference:

FDR wasn't in it for the money

I want to say for the record that I do not firmly believe anyone who would collect Mallard Fillmore for that reason alone has to be the real Zodiac Killer. Let's just let the process work.
