That damned Laugh

What's Mallard raving about today?

SNL.

Look, I have no idea what the hell Mallard is bleating about. I think that may be Moammar Khadafy, but who can tell?

And I just got off a plane 2 hours ago...so, I will look to the comments to help me out.

Update: Thanks for nothing in the comments...so far. Although I guess we have a nominee for 2009 Golden Flash.

I'm sure the Tinsh slagging SNL because he's just now getting around to being pissed at their part in torpedoing the aspirations of his beloved Sarah P. But how Ghaddafi fits into that is beyond me.

So, SNL will attempt to make itself funny again. Unlike Mallard Fillmore, which has never been funny before.

DaveyK, I think we're all baffled by this one.

Okay, some 2-3 weeks ago Qaddafi's team erected a tent on one of Trump's NY estates, up in Bedford.

I guess that since it was New York, Tinz thought that the SNL connection would make sense.

As I said, it's a guess; I can't get inside the head of a bitter alcoholic with writer's block, despite having a fondness for Kubrick's "The Shining."

Who the hell knows.

Not every Mallard strip has to be an amateurish, immature rant against most of the people in the U.S. Some Mallards simply make no sense whatsoever (but those are pretty much the only two options).

Last week, SNL made bigtime fun of Obama, accusing him of having done nothing.

Three weeks from now, we can expect Tinshley to do the same, in connection with Obama's NPP.

Query: will Tinshley think SNL is funny then?

On the bright side, Ka-Daffy is one of his better likenesses.

Cheers!

It's probably because Khadafy's speech word by word makes about as much sense as Sarah Palin's when SNL used them.

The problem?

The speech was 98 minutes long, and much of the rambling and incoherence might be due to the interpreter(s). Sarah Palin speaks native gibberish English and was so delightfully concise.

At the very least, the folks at SNL puts some degree of effort into their work, which is more than you can say for Tinsley.

Ah! Now I, uh, get it. Well, I get who it's supposed to BE, but the fact remains that Tinsley was obviously more drunk than usual when he slapped together this piece of raving, incoherent nonsense.

It seems to just be the standard Qaddafi is insane joke - spurned by the weird incoherent speech Qaddafi made at the UN - which is a joke that's already been done, and better, by everyone from Jon Stewart to Jay Leno. Even "The View" has done this bit by now.

So it's like "woooh! This guy's nuts! He should do comedy!"

Of course, Mr. "In Other News" has to slam SNL first by implying that THEIR not funny and need a new perspective.

In other news, Mallard can't frame a joke without starting with "in other news..."

Verification word: PINAMP - a stereo system so fine it needs to be put on a calendar...

Agh, that should have been spurred, not spurned... sorry...

Thanks, exanon and Anthony. All I remembered was Q's tent; I completely forgot that he gave a speech at the U.N. Me, and probably most of the people who saw the strip today. It was a non-story even at the time, and disappeared within a single 24-hour news cycle.

Leaving newspaper readers today trying to figure out why Bob Dylan is making fun of his two ex-wives.

Bob Dylan? I think it looks more like a bad caricature of Bob Marley wearing a yamukle.

Basic premise: Khadafy is daffy!

Tinsley, being a clumsy idiot, immediately buries that under his usual tropes:

-- Mocking foreign cultures (don't you love it when Tinsley pretends to respect women?);
-- Punchlines that are so "done" some people don't recognize them anymore;
-- Whiny attacks on "liberal" sources funnier/more successful than he (long list there);
-- Bad caricature.

...and so he loses the premise, but pushes all the buttons that Dittoheads and anti-fans alike expect him to push. In his world, that's success, I guess.

Thanks for nothing in the comments...so far.

...Geez, sorry. I was here and you weren't. Gotta go to bed sometime.

Well, I can agree with Mallard on one thing: SNL hasn't been funny in years (since the 1984/85 season, by my reckoning).

By the way, has anyone else noticed that Mallard never opens his mouth when he speaks? Is his jaw wired shut? Is he talking through his nose?

Oh, wait -- I just realized: It's because he's always talking out of his ass. Never mind.

Maybe if you hadn't posted it several hours past the usual time, I would have chimed in with my guess: Father Guido Sarducci. And he does have experience making TV audiences laugh!

Heh.

It's nice to know other people find Don Novello funny. I'm biased as he's family.

exanonymous - you're related to lazlo toth???

I'm not related to the crazy guy who vandalized the Pieta.

But the other guy, yes.

My guess is that Tinsley is trying to equate the UN summit with a session of SNL. Even then, he still botches the joke through his own research-fueled incoherence.

When I watch an episode of SNL, 5 minutes are actually very funny, 10 are cute, and for the rest I just want them to take the skit out back and shoot it.

If the writers could just do a Robot Chicken-type show, where if you have one joke you get it over with in 15 seconds and move on, instead of milking it to death and constantly trying to come up with new wacky characters...

Here's where Tin Eye's usual practice of having whoever he tries to caricature labeling himself in a thought balloon ("I'm Abraham Lincoln, and...") would have come in handy.

Rootbeer said...

At first I thought the caricature was supposed to be "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka, but he wouldn't be asking anybody to "take his wives". He has his own way of resolving domestic issues.
