That damned Summer

What's Mallard raving about today?

Summer vacation.

Mallard, stop trying to be Calvin & Hobbes. It's embarrassing.

I, too, yearn for the long-lost days of karate-chopping blue bushes.

The little family scene crammed in the middle of this crowded mess--of Dave reading to Rush by moonlight--is a heartwarming moment, no doubt inspired by a similar scene from Batshit's own childhood.

...Then you realize what a hate-filled, spiteful bastard Batshit grew up to be anyway, and the feeling immediately fades.

Stop trying to fake it, Batshit. This isn't as offensive as the strips in which you pretend to be patriotic or Christian, but it's still as phony as a U.S. flag made in China.

So last week, li'l Rush was mad because he couldn't go to the super-hardcore-awesome charter school that would challenge him, but instead had to go to the lame-o regular easy school. Now we learn he just hates school in general. Sure, okay. Whatever.

Kids like playing and summer vacation more than they like returning to school.

Also, water is wet and the sky is blue.

Mallard Fillmore is boring when it's not partisan.

Huh? I already checked off "Yawn." What more is there to say?

When Tinshley's summer flashes before his eyes, it's just one long blackout.

Another poorly-drawn joke-free "comic" from Tinsley that my 8 year-old could've come up with in her sleep. Or as we like to call it, Wednesday.

Haha, yeah, it's true! That thing that people are always saying, that's so ingrained in our culture that it's part of the zeitgeist:

"In those final seconds before school starts, your entire summer flashes before your eyes."

Ain't it the truth.

Lord knows why the kid's already sitting at a desk today, as the first day of for the DC public school system isn't until August 23.

Tinsley, on May 11 in a cartoon published August 11, you copied a joke from Richard Pryor; this time, you stole one from Calvin Hobbes. You used this plagiarism to express your hatred of school. Maybe, if you had stayed past the sixth grade, you would have learned something--no, wait, you are too much of a fucking retard to learn anything.

Let's be positive: copying jokes from Richard Pryor and Calvin and Hobbes has resulted in the two best-written "Mallard Fillmores all year. They were still hate-filled and badly drawn, but the writing was o.k.

Maybe Tinshley should just redraw Get Fuzzy without Rob ... sort of a hatefilled Garfield Minus Garfield thing

Nah, Bucky makes too much sense and you know, does stuff. Though, slap some poorly written labels on everything and it'll be perfect. The vampires are "anchor babies," Satchel is a liberal, and Bucky is the beacon of sanity.

The weasel? Terrorist.

Um... who was watching Little Rush during the break?

Parents do not get the summer off.
(Well, my mom does, but she works in the schools. And my sister and I are old enough, though not mature enough, to be left alone for extended periods of time.)

And hey! I know one school that started today - The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Where my sister is...EEK!

oh no, this is a serious problem...

but first, no human being should be grey - however, I watched a movie last night called Humjoli where the "ugly" bride had "dark" skin... and when she was older it was effing GREY, like they'd used greasepaint or something.

WV - press. I shit you not.

I swear I've seen this exact Mallard Fillmore cartoon before. I'm not subjecting myself to the archives to prove it though.

Why are all his summer activities under a full moon? Is he a vampire? That would explain his gray skin tone.

I just dread next week or the week after when we all have to contend with all the "Ground Zero Mosque" strips.

*pre-emptively bangs head against desk*

I wonder if Tinshley's syndicate moved his back-to-school strips to the middle of August because his strips about L'Affaire Sherrod were just too embarrassing and had to be cut. Pity -- I was looking forward to seeing what bigoted crap he might blart out about that one.

I guess, as Steve-O mentions, we'll have to wait for Bruce's take on the Burlington Coat Factory Community Center for our dose of no-it's-not-racism-honest.

I wonder that sort of thing about a lot of his cartoons; you may have seen me wondering in the comments of this very blog. Well, for values of "too embarrassing" that mean "legally actionable under American libel law".
