Those damned plates

What's Mallard raving about today?

President Obama, Commemorative Plates.

The Free Market is to blame for reviving the "cheesy collectible" industry, not President Obama.

Only an intellectual midget could confuse the two.

Why do you hate Capitalism so much, Mallard? I can only assume it is because you are a Communist.

Mallard's box of whiskey is right. I live just next to Oakland, CA and I can attest that at least half of my neighborhood's economic activity centers around collectible Obama plates and XXL Obama T-shirts. The president should harness this power by appointing a flea market czar.

I think this is Mallard's annual funny one. He's getting it out of the way early this year. Also, he looks like he's holding a box of cheesy comestibles!

Such is the result of capitalism.

Or is he honestly one of those stupid enough to believe that true capitalism would kill off stupidity by being money secretly climbing out of its safe in the night and strangling its owner thereby ensuring that only the angelic side lives on for his person profit?

Presumably all the collectible medallions made of real WTC steel (and real human ashes) and the other gruesome 9/11 memorabilia that red staters have been cheerfully amassing over the past 7 years don't count as "cheesy".

I loved the snide reference to Obama's "sleek torso".

Is Tinkley trying to rally the out-of-shape couch-potato crowd to action?

Or does just have have a man-crush?
(Not that there's anything WRONG with that...)

I actually think it's time to reach across the aisle, because intelligent people on both sides of the debate can agree that both Obama coins and 9/11 coins are idiotic, opportunistic crap.

PS - Does anyone else find that one commercial creepy when the guy is working, looks at his Obama plate, smiles, and then goes back to work?

I'm with anony mostly, an Obama commemorative coin at least has the 'first African American President' thing going for it. I think the commemorative plate thing is kinda weird but to each their own. The 9/11 stuff is pretty ghoulish in my opinion, mostly because it seems either like a murder-groupie sort of thing or a person trying to find items that let them hang onto hate and rage.

My first thought when reading this was that Colbert did this joke way better. Tinsley can take a premise full of opportunity and still make it suck. What a hack.

Oddly enough as terrible as I almost always find to Tinsley to be, this is much better than Lewis Black screaming wildly about in on The Daily Show. Then again, I don't like Black's schtick.

Today, Mallard was funny. Credit where credit's due.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Whoa whoa whoa. I'm willing--grudgingly--to give credit where credit is due, but we're really proclaiming today's installment funny? I'm not down with that. Less offensive than usual, okay, but it's still an obvious premise, poorly executed. Don't let's get carried away.

An obvious premise - that is INCREDIBLY late, unless he wasn't going to acknowledge Obamamania until after the inauguration.

Also, I thought I was the only one who wasn't too fond of Lewis Black's screaming thing. I don't like the animated thing on Colbert's show either.

Also OT, but back to comics sites, has anyone been able to get Comics I Don't Understand this week? or last? (Or the one before?)

This seems funny because there isn't a blinding white duck crotch in the middle of the comic today.

We're in shock.

Could Duck And Cover be having a beneficial impact?

This comic rated a smirk from me. This technically represents the high point of Mallard's attempts at humor for me so far.

And I do agree that Lewis Black didn't do that well on this subject. Though I find his stand up pretty funny.

Black CAN be funny, but he can also be tiresome, and he IS pretty one-note. I know I sigh inwardly whenever Steward starts a segment with "when a news story falls through the cracks..."

Black's work on TDS is less effective than his standup, because he doesn't have as much time to build to a towering rage, and because he doesn't get to swear anywhere near enough. Also, he can't read off a TelePrompTer without tripping all over himself. But his standup routine can't be beat.
